Windows 10: Big changes could be coming as Microsoft prepares Windows 10X

Microsoft has said little about its plans for Windows 10X, which was unveiled back in October 2019 for flagship dual-screen devices. In May 2020, Microsoft said it would bring 10X to single-screen devices first and reports suggested that the new operating system would leverage the power of the cloud to run legacy apps.

Windows 10X is a variation of Windows 10 that uses modern components rather than legacy and it features a simpler user interface without live tiles or a proper file explorer.

Windows 10X was finalized in December 2020 and it’s now being serviced with fixes or improvements before heading to the manufacturers. Microsoft is currently testing Build 20180 for Windows 10X, which is based on Windows 10 Iron “21H1” update.

The Build 20180 with additional bug fixes will be released to the manufacturers in the next few weeks.

Microsoft is currently planning to launch Windows 10X in Spring 2021 (between March and June). In late 2021 or early 2022, Microsoft will release the first big update for Windows 10X with improvements from the Sun Valley update.

Taskbar improvements in Windows 10X

According to internal documentation, Windows 10X could also change the way taskbar works.

In Windows 10X, taskbar icons are centered by default, unlike in Windows 10 where they’re aligned to the left. In addition to the pinned apps, taskbar can also display the app which was launched recently, similar to Android and iOS.

Microsoft also noted that taskbar can display “running websites”, which can either be in foreground or background.

Other features include:

Multiple instances of an app are grouped together under the same icon.

A new animation to highlight the focus of the taskbar.

Extended Ul: Start menu will gently move to the left side of the taskbar as you open more apps.

Three different taskbar sizes: Small, medium and large.

Gesture: You can swipe up anywhere on the Taskbar to launch the Start Menu.

Microsoft reportedly changes Windows 10X plans for dual-screen devices

Microsoft is setting internal expectations that it won't deliver any Windows 10X devices in calendar 2020, my contacts say. This isn't really surprising, given what's going on externally with the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. But for enthusiasts who were looking forward to dual-screen Surface Neo devices this holiday season, the reality is taking root.

My contacts say that Chief Product Officer Panos Panay informed some of his team internally today, April 8, that Microsoft wouldn't be delivering its own Surface Neo dual-screen 10X devices this calendar year. In addition, Microsoft also won't be enabling third-party dual-screen Windows devices to ship with 10X in calendar 2020, I hear.

Microsoft's new priority is to get Windows 10X on single-screen devices first -- which could be good news for those who were hoping that Microsoft's 10X push might help the company in its Chromebook-compete effort. (Single-screen devices means both 2-in-1-type form factors and traditional clamshell-type devices.)

I am hearing Microsoft is not saying that it plans to delay its Android-based Surface Duo to some time beyond this holiday season.

I asked Microsoft for comment, but a spokesperson said the company had nothing to share...

Leaked docs indicates Windows 10X will be coming to clamshell laptops

When we Microsoft watchers first got wind of Windows Lite/Santorini, tipsters indicated that the coming Windows 10 variant would be key to Microsoft's Chromebook-compete strategy. But when Microsoft took the wraps off Windows 10X, as the coming new flavor of Windows 10 is known officially, there was no mention of the OS being available anywhere other than dual-screen devices like the coming Surface Neo. However, a new leak sheds more light on Microsoft's real intentions with 10X.

On October 25, the WalkingCat on Twitter posted a link to a password-protected Microsoft site known as santorini-os.azurewebsites.net. Shortly after that, "Boris" (a k a @_milincic_) posted screen shots of what was behind that link. (Microsoft has since removed the site.) And one of the most interesting bits in what he posted was a mention about Windows 10X being available "for both clamshells and foldables."

Microsoft went public with Windows 10X during its fall Surface hardware event in early October. At that time, officials described Windows 10X as built for "dual-screen PCs." Officials made no mention of 10X being available on any other type of device in early October.

Though pricing isn't yet available for Microsoft and third-party devices running 10X, it's a safe bet that anything with two glass screens won't be cheap. They won't be competing with Chromebooks in th education market. But if PC makers bring Windows 10X to more traditional clamshell laptop form factors, there's a chance they could deliver machines running the simpler and cleaner Windows 10X OS that could compete with Chromebooks, at least price-wise...
