    Big problems with update KB4056892

One of my machines is a HP Laptop. This has windows 10 - 64 bit O/S. Build 1709 (build 16299.192. Laptop has a AMD processor.

It has updated itself - and keeps trying to install KB4056892. This goes all the way through, until there is a message to restart.
Following a restart it just hangs. I have to resort to the automatic repair route - which brings the laptop back to life. Along the way there is a message that states "we couldn’t complete update, undoing changes"

How can I stop this laptop from repeatedly receiving and downloading this particular up date. Would there be any mileage in downloading this individual update direct from Microsoft, and attempting an install that way?

Honestly windows 10 updates have been a succession of problems to many of us - one day (perhaps) they might get it right.
    Your help appreciated.

    :)

    Hi skofab

Use this tutorial to hide update.

Hide or Show Windows Updates in Windows 10

This issue could be part of the Spectre / Meltdown issue. AMD's documentation was inaccurate. You can google. MS had to pull some updates.

  5. After the update and restart, just wait. Some times this will takes quite a while to complete after the restart.

As always, many many thanks Caledon Ken

This fix did the trick first time. Now have the hide update fix readily to hand for any future problems.
Having now 'read up' on this issue - I am surprised that with a known problem - how is it that the update is still being presented, I thought it was supposed to have been withdrawn.

Anyway, I am now up and running thanks to you.

  7. I too, am anticipating the update to occur upon completion of my configuring my hp 15-cd040wm notebook computer and accessing the internet. That may be within the next 12 hours. After that it is simply a matter of waiting for the Update Assistant "Automatic" Delayed Trigger to occur. Upon initializing Internet setup the Assistant is automatically triggered. My design and creation of the WindowsUpdate.reg key as listed in this forum is an 'alternative' method intended to stop the update, or at least defer it periodically for additional time. A stop command of this type requires addition of this key prior to any use of Internet Service or even opening any kind of Web Page (.htm, html, .mht, .com, .org --- or otherwise) immediately after first computer boot. After that, if any form of recognizable activity by user (Administrative or not) involves IP Address Protocol it may trigger the Assistant, even without an Internet setup or connection.
If it is unsuccessful all that is required is deletion of the key to eliminate it from both the registry and Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Service. Hold Harmless effectiveness.
To do this requires some knowledge of Registry Editing. The alternative is a Delete form of the same Registry Key with the Duplicate Key Reference removed.
Example Only ... Do Not Use for Test or Otherwise:

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Some_Hive_Key\*.*] --- (this first deletes key if existing)
and delete the line below it ...
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Some_Hive_Key\*.*] --- (this adds or replaces key)

Copy and Save in Notepad as Filename: WindowsUpdate.reg ...
    then 'Double-Click' to install

    Big problems with update KB4056892

I believe KB4056892 is Build 16299.192. The latest update is Build 16299.194 or KB4073290, think it is the 'fix'. I just did a pair of HP s5000-1 s5310y SFF Desktops with AMD Athlon II X2 250 CPUs, no problems after 4 restarts each.

Yes, it's the AMD 'fix'. This update is not available through windows update, only from the update catalog.

The fix for AMD CPUs is KB4073290 but this is only currently available in 64 bit format. Users like me forced to use 32 bit Windows 10 on old AMD CPUs remain stuffed until a 32 bit update is released.

  11. Glad things worked out Skofab and the from the posts above lots of other good info.

Bree or Berton, would you know the KB number of the AMD fix for Win 8.1?

Interesting registry key mod posted. Will have to look at that.

Haven't seen an update for earlier versions of Windows, don't know if the problem exists in those.
Nearly all of my clients have moved to Win10 but a couple still use Win7.

  13. Big problems with update KB4056892

I have client with 8.1. Last Tuesday it updated and got security KB4056895. Since then his machine BSOD on DPC Watchdog Violation.

I removed said KB Thursday, set updates to none, and it has been running fine. His processor is an A6-5400K.

My plan was to wait to Feb 13/18 and re initiate updates. Thanks for responding.
