Windows 10: Bing Maps Streetside Imagery Integrated into OpenStreetMap iD Editor

Microsoft has a long history of working with the community to help improve OpenStreetMap . This includes being the first company to provide aerial imagery to the community for editing and, more recently, our release of almost ten million building footprints. We continue to have an interest in fostering a thriving and growing community of both contributors and users of OpenStreetMap.

This week Microsoft is integrating its Streetside imagery for the United States into iD, a popular web-based editor for contributing to OpenStreetMap. This is the same imagery currently visible on Bing Maps now embedded into a popular editing application initially developed and now maintained by Mapbox. Our aim is that it continues to encourage the community to contribute and improve OpenStreetMap.

The Streetside imagery covers more than 80% of the US population with 360 degree views. The massive imagery dataset covers approximately 1.6 million kilometers and takes nearly 5PB of storage! This imagery when viewed in conjunction with Bing imagery along with existing data in OpenStreetMap represents a significant increase in verifiable ground truth for OpenStreetMap contributors.

Over 450 Areas of Bird’s Eye Imagery Now Live on Bing Maps

If you’re headed out on an end-of-the-year vacation this holiday season, you can preview that special place on Bing Maps using the new Bird’s Eye experience. We have been busy processing the oblique imagery to bring you major metropolitan areas to view before you travel. We recently surpassed the 450 areas mark for our Bird’s Eye imagery and there are a host of vacation favorites amongst them.

New Bird’s Eye areas

Oblique imagery is a great complement to Aerial 2D imagery because it has much more depth and provides a view of your destination that is more familiar and in line with what people expect. You can see Bird’s Eye imagery in Bing Maps, and this view can offer a better context for navigation because building facades can be used as landmarks. With this release, the new Bird’s Eye experience passes 450 areas and the count of oblique aerial view of your favorite places keeps growing. Response to the previous version of the Bird’s Eye was very positive and offers a unique asset that Bing Maps can provide to its users. The new experience continues this asset forward with better quality imagery and a better overall user experience.

With this release, the Bing Maps Bird’s Eye product offers a much higher resolution aerial oblique views and is based off Microsoft-owned data. Bing Maps V8 Web Control SDK October 2017 Update

Bird’s Eye map type now in dropdown

Bird’s eye imagery has been available in the Bing Maps V8 Web Control since May, but it could only be displayed programmatically. Now Bird’s eye is available in the map type dropdown just like all of the other map types. This option will be disabled (appear faded) when the map is centered over a location that does not have Bird’s eye imagery.

Limit Autosuggest suggestions to a single country

The Autosuggest manager now lets you specify a country to limit suggestions to using the new countryCode option. This takes in ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country region codes. See Autosuggest options for more details.

Enable CORs on tile layers

This new map option enables CORs (Cross Resource Sharing) on the base map tiles, as well as on all tile layers. This allows accessing the pixel data of the map canvas without any browser security issues. Check out this demo that uses this and the map canvas to generate a static image of the map. See map options for more details.

Customize the Drawing toolbar

You can now limit which toolbar options appear in the drawing toolbar. Try it now

GeoXmlLayer Events

The GeoXmlLayer class now supports all of the same events as the Layer class. If you are not familiar with the GeoXmlLayer, it was released as part of the GeoXml module in July and makes it easy to import and export common spatial file formats such as KML, KMZ, GeoRSS, GML (via GeoRSS) and GPX. Access Direction Pushpins

Access the pushpins of all waypoints rendered by the directions manager using the new getAllPushpins() function. Customize their look and feel or add events to them. See the DirectionsManager class for more details.

Upgrade your old Bing Maps apps to V8

Bing Maps versions 6.3 and 7 are both retired and are no longer supported. Be sure to upgrade your app to Bing Maps V8 Web Control and take advantage of all the great new features. Here are some useful resources:

Bing Maps V8 Summer Update

The main release branch of the Bing Maps Version 8 (V8) Web Control has been regularly updated over the summer. These updates have brought several new features, both big and small, as well as many improvements and bug fixes to existing features. The Bing Maps V8 TypeScript definitions have also been updated accordingly. Here are some of the more notable new features added in this release.

Custom Map Styles

Customize the look and feel of the road maps inside of your application. Change the colors of the roads and land, hide certain types of labels. Create a style that aligns with your applications UI, company branding or change it just for fun. Not only are these available in the Bing Maps V8 Web Control, but you can also use custom maps styles with the Bing Maps REST Imagery service (static map images) and with the Windows UWP map control.

GeoXml Module

Easily import and export common spatial file formats such as KML, KMZ, GeoRSS, GML (via GeoRSS) and GPX. Load it as a layer on the map or directly access the data with just a few lines of code.

Ground Overlays

Overlay georeferenced images on top of the map so that they move and scale as you pan and zoom the map. This is great for building floor plans, overlaying old maps, or imagery from a drone.

200+ Code Samples Available

In March we announced an open source project that had 160+ code samples that showed cool and interesting ways to use the Bing Maps V8 Web Control. This project has now grown to well over 200 samples and continues to grow. Here are few of the newer samples:

SVG Pushpin Maker

Not only does Bing Maps V8 Web Control support creating pushpins using SVG’s, but it also provides the ability to add placeholder values in them as well. These placeholder values can then be set using the pushpins color and text options and dynamically change using the pushpin options without having to edit the SVG. This sample provides several tools for creating custom SVG templates that can easily be added to your application.
