'Bit Rot' Data Corruption & Mitigation

I saw mention on a photo forum of people experiencing corruption of photos in long term storage ('bit rot') caused by the slow corruption of files on storage media due to bits randomly flipping from media deterioration.

I haven't noticed this myself to date but wonder if others recognise the issue and have a means of detecting and coping with the problem?

    :)

  3. ReFS cannot properly detect and report corruption

Thanks for the suggestion, but a RAID controller cannot detect and handle corruptions such as bit rot. For example, say we have mirrored files and one has a bit flipped. The typical RAID card will not know which is the correct file and will merely replace one with the other according to a specific rule. It could very well be wrong.

ReFS has been worked on for most of a decade and should at least detect improper checksums. There are some folks who I'm sure are assuming that it does and that their data integrity is protected. It's not. ReFS is not ready and RAID is no remedy for data integrity issues either.

    Bit Rot?

Your description reminds me of the old Amiga PCs.
After using programs for a couple of weeks, various function would stop working and eventually the entire program would become unusable.

Maybe the dreaded "Bit Rot" has returned.
