BitLocker Asking for Recovery Key Every Time I Boot into Windows 10 in Dual Boot Setup with...

Hello,I have a PC running Windows 10 installed on an encrypted SSD using BitLocker. Recently, I added a second SSD and installed Ubuntu 23 in UEFI mode for a dual boot setup. Since then, every time I boot into Windows, BitLocker prompts me to enter the recovery key. This has become quite inconvenient, and I'm looking for a solution to avoid this.I suspect the issue might be related to the interaction between BitLocker and the UEFI bootloader installed by Ubuntu. Both operating systems are installed on separate drives, and I've ensured that Ubuntu is installed in UEFI mode.Is there a way to con

Windows 10 Home asks for Bitlocker recovery key prompt on every boot after dual boot with ubuntu

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

Please note that Windows 10 Home does not have a Bitlocker feature, however it can be embedded by manufacturer of the device. You can read more about it in the article:
BitLocker drive encryption in Windows 10 for OEMs. As you mentioned
that you are using dual boot, I would like to inform you that UEFI Secure Boot may have been toggled with a BIOS update. These generic instructions should allow you to locate the UEFI Secure Boot setting in most BIOS.

    • Power the device off and then back on.
    • Look for a message on the boot screen just before or after the manufacturer logo appears. You may need to press the “F1”,”F2”, or ”Delete” button, whatever key is indicated on the boot screen to enter BIOS Settings.
    • Inside BIOS, look for a tab called BOOT and select that page.
      • Depending on the BIOS manufacturer this page could be BOOT, ADVANCED, STARTUP, etc.
    • Look for a setting for UEFI Secure Boot.
      • Each BIOS could have a different name for this. These are the keywords to look for: UEFI, Secure Boot, Legacy Boot
    • Please enable Secure boot

You can also follow the instructions provided by Dell in the article:
    BitLocker
Asks for a Recovery Key Every Boot on USB-C / Thunderbolt Systems When Docked or Undocked
. If you need any further information on this, please get in touch with the manufacturer of the device.

    Hope it helps,

  3. BitLocker recovery keys after Dual Boot

    Hi Varun Kelkar,

Welcome to Microsoft Community. I'm Mosken, let me help you.

According to your description, I knew that you were asked to enter the Bitlocker recovery key when dual booting Windows 11 with Windows + Linux. Is that right?

According to your description and the current situation, you may have used Bitlocker to encrypt the Windows system partition, but after you install the Linux system, the original system partition state has been changed, so you will be asked to enter the recovery key.

Generally, you will be prompted to save the recovery key when you encrypt with Bitlocker, as shown in the figure below.

    • If you choose "Save to your Microsoft account", then it will exist in the Microsoft account you logged in when encrypting.
    • If you choose the other three, it should be a .txt file with a long name contains alphanumerics, please recall whether and where you have saved it.
If you can't find the recovery key in your Microsoft account or the file that included the recovery key, I suggest you try unlocking the partition in Linux, back up your data, and then format the partition.

If it cannot be unlocked, sorry, there is currently no other effective solution to unlock a partition encrypted with Bitlocker, you can only reformat the partition to use it normally again.

The above steps are provided based on the information I have learned so far, and hope that could help you a little. If the problem still exists, please provide us a full PSR from the beginning, through the whole process, and until the error message is displayed, so we can further investigate.
