Windows 10: Bitlocker key. Email does arrive.

I am trying to get my Bitlocker recovery key. My laptop went into a loop while doing a windows update. My support contract people want to reinstall windows but I need the data. They say I will lose the data unless they do a chargeable data recovery. For this they need the Bitlocker key. I sign into my MS. I can see my device. I ask for the key to be emailed but it never arrives. How can I get the key? Is it true my data files would all be lost if they reinstall windows? Thanks.

Bitlocker Recovery Key with university email

I used a university email to sign into Windows 10 on my personal device and needed to take the laptop to a repair shop. They needed the Bitlocker recovery key to get out of a repair loop, but when I signed in with the Azure account, it signs me in, and
lists the device, but there is no bitlocker key on the website. I contacted my university IT department and they told me to contact Microsoft because they do not keep bitlocker recovery keys for personal devices. I couldn't find a support page or number on
the bitlocker page so I am coming here for any help possible. Thank you.

Thank you for posting your concern. It is good that you know the Bitlocker key to properly get into the computer. To help you turn off the Bitlocker key, you can follow the steps below:

Please make sure you are signed as the Administrator of the computer.

To suspend BitLocker Drive Encryption on an operating system drive

• 
  Click Start, click Control Panel, click
  System and Security, and then click BitLocker Drive Encryption.

  Click Suspend Protection for the operating system drive.
  
• 
  A message is displayed, informing you that your data will not be protected while BitLocker is suspended and asking if you want to suspend BitLocker Drive Encryption. Click
  Yes to continue and suspend BitLocker on the drive.
  

To turn off BitLocker Drive Encryption

• 
  Click Start, click Control Panel, click
  System and Security, and then click BitLocker Drive Encryption.
  
• 
  Find the drive on which you want BitLocker Drive Encryption turned off, and click
  Turn Off BitLocker.
  
• 
  A message is displayed, informing you that the drive will be decrypted and that decryption may take some time. Click
  Decrypt the drive to continue and turn off BitLocker on the drive.
