Windows 10: BITS Corruption Unfixable

By way of introduction; I've been a Windows user for many years and am a highly proficient computer user. Running Windows 10 1803.


I recently experienced an issue trying to install a Windows Update and, following online research, discovered a problem with the Background Intelligent Transfer service whereby it is continually turning off and reverting to Manual startup status. If I start the service and change the status to Automatic, 2 minutes later it is turned off again and reset to Manual. Running MS's BITS Troubleshooter tells me that the "service registration is missing or corrupt.... not fixed".


I've tried every single potential solution proffered online, via forums and help sites, etc., nothing works. I've tried restoring full system images dating back 8 weeks, same issue exists. Local system scans report a clean bill of health.


sfc /scannow = zero integrity violations found

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image / RestoreHeath = zero corruptions detected.


I contacted MS support who eventually advised a clean install. As far as I am concerned, a clean install is a very last resort. This system is very mature and includes a lot of 3rd party software, much of which I've paid for. It would be do-able but highly inconvenient. In the end, I downloaded the 1809 ISO via the Media Creation tool and performed a repair upgrade, keeping all apps, which seemed like a reasonable compromise. However, this did not work either, same problem still exists.


While researching this issue online I came across numerous instances of the same issue affecting many users over many years and, seemingly, with no viable solution other than a clean install. In my humble opinion, this is totally unacceptable. This issue is obviously fairly common and MS needs to identify the cause and issue a fix. A clean install is neither solution nor fix.

In post 26 there were steps listed to fix the operating system corruption.
Are you able to follow them?
In post 29 was the suggested dism repair command.

 

Corrupted file RAR

If the archive has been created using WinRAR, why don't you try WinRAR itself? It has a built-in repair feature for repairing corrupted archive (ZIP as well as RAR). Follow the steps given below:

• Open WinRAR application in your system.
• Now click on File tab > Open or simply press Ctrl+O.
• A small window "Find Archive" will pop up. Locate the corrupt RAR archive from your system directory and select it.
• Now click Open button.
• Click Tools tab > Repair archive or simply press Alt+R.
• Again a small window "Repairing File name.rar" will pop up.
• Now click Browse to select a location to save the repaired archive.
• Check the box "Treat the corrupt archive as RAR" and click OK.
• WinRAR will start repairing of corrupt RAR archive. Once it gets completed click Close.

I hope the above steps will help you repair the corrupted RAR archive.

Color bit depth is at 6-bit on Display properties of Windows 10 pro

Try the below suggested steps and check if the suggested options are available to change the Color bit Depth value

1. Right click on the desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel.
2. Expand the Display, and then highlight the Change resolution.
3. On the right side, check if there is 8 bpc listed under
   Output color depth.
4. You may select 8 bpc and restart the device to witness the changes.
