  1. BitTorrent: How To Keep Record Information of Downloaded Torrents?

Hi computer experts, I've got a serious problem that I need help with.

I'm finding myself using Bit Torrent to download legal and non-copyrighted materials like video files, .MP3 files and .PDF files more and more, but I want to store information about the particular .TORRENT file so I can review it in the future.

This is what I've been doing to store information and check that the .TORRENT is a genuine file, but it's very time consuming:
I download and add the .TORRENT file to Vuze then I'll create a .TXT file using the Windows "Notepad" app and I write down the following information by looking at the page that I downloaded the .TORRENT from:
--The date the .TORRENT was originally uploaded to the tracker
--The amount of "completed downloads" the .TORRENT has
--File size of the .TORRENT file
--Brief description of the comments left by other users

How can I do this in a way that's faster and more reliable?

    Thanks for any help!

    :)

  3. How one can associate a given extension (.torrent) to a certain program (utorrent)?

    Download install UTorrent/bittorrent...

for some reason we can't add extensions

So... When you download the torrent you have to use that how to open popup more apps >look for app on pc> default for utorrent/Bittorrent hopefully should be CLICK ON this PC> DOUBLE CLICK Windows/Local Disk C:> Program files("Program files(x86)" if you
have it) >Utorrent/Bittorrent and look for Utorrents/Bittorrents symbol and double click it...

In order to get the pop up for How to open goto the downloads folder it should end with .Torrent after the filename or you can do it the lazy way redownload it and it'll pop up again...

BitTorrent: How To Keep Record Information of Downloaded Torrents?

    ]Hi there

The best way of using Torrents is NOT to download the Torrent file (.to files) but to use the Magnet Link and from your Torrent client when you add the totrrent use the add by URL to load the magnet link to the torrent client.

The Torrent client will then search for trackers (peers and seeds) and then download the torrent to your designated directory.

Now all you have to do is simply copy the torrent file / directory names to a spreadsheet --you can add comments, size, where downloaded from etc etc.

Here's what my client looks like with magnet links when I want to get Nordic TV programs --when I'm in the UK I rarely watch their rubbish --just seems an endless diet of soaps, reality TV and boring old music programs.

My client is DELUGE (Linux) but similar to Bit torrent

BTW for torrents --even for uncopyrighted / legal material always use something like Tor Browser -- saves any possible needless confrontation --torrents are often 100% LEGAL but the usually fairly ignorant people who often work in ISP's / service industries etc usually don't have a clue -- avoiding confrontation in the first place is better than even arguing from a position of strength !!.

    Hi there

The URL is actually generated from the magnet link

for example I like the US series Timeless

So for the latest episode using magnetic link I feed this into the deluge URL and then I get S01E05 (Episode S01E05)

As for the data the OP wants to store =--that's up to him -- I've no idea but everybody arranges databases into what they feel is convenient --all I was showing was an easy way to collect the Data -- what data he wants to keep etc is up to him.

  6. Your ideas are great so thanks so much for your reply!

I should have been more clear in my first post. I wasn't planning on downloading anything copyrighted so I don't need the TOR app.

I just had another idea: Instead of typing the information into a .TXT file, what if I just took screenshots of the torrent's details instead?

  8. BitTorrent: How To Keep Record Information of Downloaded Torrents?

I've been really brainstorming as many ideas as possible, but the best idea I've had is to just take screenshots of the torrent's page that displays the number of "completed downloads" the .TORRENT has and the date the .TORRENT was uploaded.

    Hi there

    @NiceAndShy

Why not simply get the torrents data and save as TXT into a spreadsheet - you can then manipulate fields

or even the Generic title from the torrent

I do load some US TV shows as where I am you'll never get these in a million years -- either really Boring Reality TV stuff from UK or some terrible programs from Russia / Estonia etc with Finnish subtitles -- no wonder our bars are always full to overflowing - even (or especially) in middle of winter.

Before the usual "Copying programs" crowd starts complaining - I'd happily purchase these - but even on Netflix or Amazon Prime our offerings are totally different to what's available in USA.

    Cheers

  10. How do I get the torrents data into a spreadsheet? This sounds like a good idea.

Just make sure you're not downloading copyrighted files!

  11. I've been brainstorming and the best idea I've come up with is taking screenshots of the torrent's URL page and the torrent's information inside my BitTorrent client, which is Vuze.

  12. I appreciate your reply very much, but I've never tried using the "Magnet link" before. I just tried finding it in Vuze, but I couldn't find it?

  13. BitTorrent: How To Keep Record Information of Downloaded Torrents?

Is there anything else I can do to record details about a torrent file I've downloaded other than taking screenshots of the torrent URL?

I'd be in BIG trouble if a torrent site went offline as I'd be unable to check or verify a particular torrent that's on my PC's HDD...

    Hi there

If you use a magnet link - the torrent will start downloading (data files) to the target area of your torrent client. If the download gets interrupted etc the torrent client will start a "re-check" and resume from the point at which the download stopped.

Depending on what site you are using (there's plenty of LEGAL reasons for using Torrents -- a lot of Linux distros use this method now) it's 100% UNWISE ever to download the torrent file directly -- all sorts of traces etc.

I would always when downloading Torrents use something like TOR or a VPN and always use magnet links if you don't want little nasty letters from ISP. Often with all the secret monitoring going on your PC (Google etc) they assume anybody who is using a torrent client is GUILTY -- maybe 90% are but not everybody and using TOR or a VPN or both avoids the problem in its entirety.

If you can handle Linux one of the safest and fastest torrent clients is DELUGE.

    Cheers

  15. Your reply is much appreciated!

I'm only using Bit Torrent to download legal files like ebooks that are in the public domain.

One other thing that's bothered me is this:

There's a torrent I want to download, but there is only one seed on it so I'm worried that the user seeding is able to change the contents of the torrent.

    Is this possible?
