Windows 10: Black screen and keyboard off when connecting to an external screen and an external keyboard

I connected my Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 laptop to an external screen and an external keyboard and that moment the screen and the keyboard turned off completely. Even the power button does not work. I restarted it using the external keyboard - didn't help. Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B combination neither. Any advice...? I will be very grateful!

external keyboard weirdness

nope, forgot to mention i checked device manager everything looks good also tried all the usb ports,makes no difference. ran keyboard troubleshooter - nothing ran sfc /scannow - nothing ran malwarebytes scan - nothing set repeat delay to longest and repeat rate to slowest - nothing UPDATE: ok now this is really weird...seems the placement of the external keyboard makes a difference. if i place it on table at the bottom of laptop ,it acts up , if i place keyboard on top of laptops keyboard its FINE! makes no sense ,but anyhoooow...i can type again without cursing (note to self---get laptops keyboard fixed asap) just strange the other external keyboard i used didnt act like this one ALSO: when i had keyboard placed at bottom of laptop i noticed that if i say for instance open 1 browser on laptop screen and another browser on external monitor (have dual screen setup) , the mouse curser would be laggy at 1st but eventually come right. i just put it down to my graphics probably crappy. but now that ive moved keyboard on top of lappys keyboard ,the mouse action is also normal again,no lagging between screens. obviously theres some kind of interference at bottom of laptop with this keyboard.... Keyboard shortcuts not working from external keyboard

Based on your description, I presume you are only having the problem with some of the shortcuts not working if you are using an external keyboard connected via usb. Please correct me if I'm misunderstanding you in any way.



Open the on-screen keyboard by typing "OSK" in the search bar at the bottom and check if it works using the failed shortcuts. If it works, we believe that this is indeed an issue that only occurs on the standalone keyboard.



Since you mentioned that these shortcuts used to work, but have recently stopped, have you performed any actions such as installing third-party applications, updating the BIOS, system updates, etc. in the process?



Then we also need to go through a step-by-step test to finally deduce the problem:

• Please go to Safe Mode first to check if the problem still exists in Safe Mode.
  
• We recommend you to go to the manufacturer's website of the external keyboard to download the latest version of the driver for the corresponding model and overlay it on the system to check the problem.

• Try a different keyboard (or an external USB keyboard in case of a laptop)
• See if the problem persists with the on-screen keyboard (osk.exe)
