Black Screen at Startup

If I should start my own thread on this matter I shall but I am having serious issue for which no fix seems to work. Basically I have a friend's computer (running Win10 Home v1511) which has the black screen with cursor after login issue. I tried all the popular fixes for that to no avail. I tried the sfc /scannow and that gets to about 49% before failing. I tried doing /restorehealth with DISM and get error: 1392. I tried using a tech bench ISO to repair the image and still I get error: 1392. I tried to do an in place upgrade using an ISO with the anniversary update but every time I get the error "Setup couldn't start properly."

If it makes a difference I was trying all of this in normal mode and not safe mode.

:)

Power on and off your computer three times

On the third time, your computer will boot into the Advanced Recovery environment

Click Advanced Options

Click Troubleshoot

Click Advanced Options

Click System Restore, see if you can go back to an earlier time.

If not, boot into the recovery environment again, then try a startup repair.

If that does not work, boot into the recovery environment, then click 'Go back to previous version of Windows'

If that does not work.

Go to a working computer, download, create a bootable copy, then perform a clean install.

Hi DaFees and welcome to Tenforums.
See if Kyhi's Image Health might help your friend's system.

Also, have you run chkdsk /r on the drive? I would do that first.

Which option should I try because I've already manually tried the /scanhealth, /restorehealth, and sfc /scannow all returning errors. In fact I tried them all again and attached below the logs generated.

Dism Details.txt
ScanHealth Details.txt
SFC Details.txt

The first thing I would run is #10.
There are a lot of problems in your logs, but we need to make sure the disk in in good shape first.

No problems were found. 0kb in bad sectors. So where do we go from here?

Can you get the system into a clean boot state, and then try running sfc /scannow?
Also, it may help to create a new administrative user and run sfc /scannow from there. Sometimes a user account can get corrupted, and creating a new one helps.

EDIT: You might also download and install Crystal Disk Info - Standard Edition is fine - and check the health of the hard drive, just to be sure it's not failing.

Downloaded and installed Crystal Disk Info and as I suspected the disk is, to use the program's term, "Good"

I did a clean boot state sfc /scannow and he is the log for that one:
SFC Details.txt

Then using the test admin account I made earlier I did an sfc /scannow with that one and here is the log for that one:
SFC Details.txt

I don't think there is any difference between the two logs and in short both times, as was every time I ran the test before this, the test stopped at 49% with an error.

Both logs appear to repair everything except
Code: Cannot repair member file [l:27]"Windows.Devices.Sensors.dll" of Microsoft-Windows-Sensors-Universal, version 10.0.10586.0, arch amd64, nonSxS, pkt {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35} in the store, file is missing
Do you have Fast Startup turned off on the system?

Do you have Fast Startup turned off on the system?
I do have Fast Startup turned off because that was one of the early recommended fixes for the black screen with cursor issue. I haven't turned it back on yet, apparently. Should I turn it back on?

No, please leave it off. I don't understand why it appears to fix everything except that one issue, and then shows the same for the next run, and apparently never fixes anything, then fails at 49% - even with a clean boot.

What version W10 is this thing on? 1511 or 1607? (type winver in the search box.)
Never mind, I see it's on 1511.

I think I will ask a mod to please move you to a separate thread.

@DaFees
Please fill in your system specs with the specs of your friend's system for now. Please be as specific/detailed as you can. Use Speccy (free) if you need to identify items.

Please give me a rundown of how you're dealing with the black screen: you get into the computer eventually (obviously) so, how long does it take before the desktop finally populates? Did clean boot make any difference? How does the system act when in safe mode? I'm trying to get an idea of what you are able to do/how difficult it is to do anything. That will make a difference in what we try to do.

Thanks.
