Black screen no login after screen saver

    Hi

Just been away from my computer and came back and tapped the keyboard to get a PIN login but all I got was a black screen with moving mouse cursor so had to do a hard reset. Running creators update 15063.332. Any ideas?

    :)

  2. Screen goes dark early

I had the screen going black after a minute. It was not the power settings, it was the screen saver coming on in one minute without a screen saver specified.

  3. Screensaver will not show according to the settings set in Windows 10.

Original Title: Screen Saver Stops in Win10

Yeah, I've read the other responses but I'm on a desktop, not a laptop. And, yes, I know what I'm doing. I just upgraded to Win10 from Win7 where the screen saver never changed.

I set the screen saver to start 9 minutes after I stop working. Nine is arbitrary.

The next morning, the screens are black. Once again I check screen saver settings and sure enough, the setting is still 9 minutes but the screen saver has changed to "blank."

BTW, the login screen still appears on boot-up even after I configure Windows to bypass that.

Maybe these problems are something MS has worked on and I just haven't received the proper updates yet!

    Thanks for any help!

    Hi banger.

I would check Windows update history to see if any new drivers have been installed on your behalf. (last few days.)

Additionally, do you know it was asleep and hadn't entered hibernation, deeper sleep. If problem persists I might shut off hibernation as a test.

    Command prompt(admin)

    powercfg -h off

To turn it back on replace the word off with on.

If you disable hibernation it also disables Windows Fast Startup.

You may also want to check event viewer around this time to see what was recorded and check Reliability History.

Of course it could just be a one of thing that was cleared with reboot.

Thanks Ken, Graphics driver was updated by windows update last few days but thinking it was that I updated to latest Nvidia driver from Nvidia site as a precaution. Hibernation and sleep are off on this machine so when I leave the machine screen saver kicks in after 29 minutes and screen turns off after 30 minutes. Nothing in Event log or Reliability history apart from the machine not shut down correctly which would have been the hard reset. Although the graphics drivers have recently been updated by windows update the machine did freeze once before after I left it for 30 minutes with sound repeating and mouse frozen. That time I updated the sound drivers with latest from Realtek. Thanks for your thoughts.

  6. Not to challenge you but are you sure they are off. I know you shut them off but did a little Windows helper turn them back on after a major update.

Since you are just using the "screen saver" / "monitor off" are you using any custom screen saver that may be misbehaving?

Have you tried with a different screen saver?

Thanks for the thoughts have changed the screensaver from 3D Text to Blank and re-applied the hibernation setting. See if that has any effect. It seems to happen after the machine has been up for a number of days. So far twice today it has normally returned to lock screen and I was able to login normally.

Have spent about an hour updating drivers including Realtek Sound drivers from MS Catalog. So will run for a while and see if there are any repeats of the freeze or black screen.

    Hi, ist time poster.

I'm having this startup, black screen with cursor nightmare too--hangs on Black screen at startup for an hour before it goes to the sign on screen. Been Googling and watching youtube "fix" vids like a maniac for 3 days now (a lot of Windows 10 hatred out there).

On one of the vids, the "tech guy" who did the vid wrote that if you can see ANYTHING (his emphasis) on your screen when it hangs, it's not a hard drive problem. Is this true?? I don't want to bring it into Best Buy (if I can't resolve this) and pay 150 bucks for a diagnostic just to be told my hard drive's fried and I need a new computer.

When my computer's running, it works fine. I've been leaving it on 24/7 and using Sleep Mode when I'm not using it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Think I may have found the Culprit. Installed the latest Logitech Keyboard Driver and it was taking lots of CPU resources. So went back to the old version of the software V8.53 and as soon as I installed it I got a blue screen of death. So with V8.94 buggy taking too many CPU resources I googled older versions and have installed V8.84 as V8.89 gets stuck at the installation dialogue. So far so good.

After searching the Logitech Forums there is a solution for the high CPU use on the latest driver so re-installed V8.94 and we will see if this is the culprit or not.

  12. Interesting. Thanks for posting banger. People always having CPU issues.

Hi MarkRNY. Welcome to the the TenForums @MarkRNY.

I would recommend you start a new thread. Yours is likely a Fast Start Up issue,

    To a command prompt(admin) type

    powercfg -h off

This shuts off hibernation and disables Windows Fast Start Up. Test.

If this works then you can enable hibernation by

    powercfg -h on

    Then disable Fast Start Up

Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10
