Windows 10: Black screen with cursor even in safe mode after power cut mid update

as the title says, my friend is having an issue where his power went off mid update. Now he is having issues where he gets a black screen with a functional cursor after logging in, even in safe mode.



he can do Ctrl+Alt+Del but after clicking on task manager it does not display the window.



Things i got him to try:

-safe mode (same issue)

-resetting his pc (tells him there was a problem resetting the pc)

-using the repair tool (does not work either)

-uninstalling a recent update (does not uninstall)

along with a couple more things that i cant remember but im sure if mentioned i would remember them.



im stumped and figured i would ask here to hopefully help him out because he does not have a backup yet



additional info:

-his boot drive is a 2tb HDD that is less than a year old,

- everything is plugged in properly.

Black Screen with working mouse cursor but not keyboard

It is frozen or just black screen in Safe mode ?
might try to repair Windows by an installation DVD or a USB stick

 

Black screen even in safe mode

I'm getting a black screen with cursor after login, Windows 10. Ctrl-alt-delete shows options but choosing task manager reverts to black screen. Can enter safe mode but same issue with black screen/no task manager. Suspect display drivers may be a factor
but cant find any way to disable them. Have tried recovery mode options including uninstall updates (couldn't, encountered a problem), system restore (couldn't), start-up repair (no difference). Any suggestions appreciated.

Sign in screen is always visible on boot up (standard boot or safe mode). Safe mode scrolls (visible). All previous problems and attempted fixes happen (black screen with cursor) after signing in with password.
