Try any bootable usb drive you got that you KNOW works.....on another computer. Don't care what it is. THEN take that same bootable usb and try it on the broken computer. Something is wrong, and I don't know what it is. Only way is to test your bootable usb on another computer that works.

Mike, what do you think if he tries making the USB drive with RUFUS?

Sure that would be fine too. I would just like him to try it in his good computer too, just to check that at least it works on a computer that is working.

You could even try this program to see if it boots from your good computer 1st.
Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk

This always boots also a good program to have handy sometimes too. *Smile

It sounds like you just copied the Windows 10 files over to the usb drive. This will not work, as it is not being flagged as being bootable. You need to go to a working computer and go here: Windows 10

About half way down the page is a download for the Windows Media Creation Tool. It will download and install Windows 10 onto your usb and make it bootable. When done, plug into the failing computer and boot from it.

Sorry but if done correctly it does WORK, done this many many times. The one from Tech Bench. Have one right here now on one of my usb's, boots just fine. Just by copying the files unto any USB drive.

  6. You are right that if done correctly it will work. I have used different tools to make an iso bootable from a usb drive. For someone not used to doing that the easiest way may be by using the Windows Media Creation Tool.

Mike is right. It does work using the TechBench ISO. We've got something else going on with this thing. That's why I suggested RUFUS and Mike suggested the Recovery Boot Disk from Kyhi.

I agree Mike, he needs to establish a working, bootable media of some sort on a good computer first, then take that to the ailing one.

The only thing I do differently is I don't even mount the ISO, all I do is use 7-Zip to view the files inside the iso, then tag them all, and copy them to the usb drive. Don't even have to mount any iso. *Smile

Couldn't be any simpler. 7-Zip is a Free program.

Sorry Guys. I've been busy lately and haven't been able to follow up. I thought someone recommended me buy a Scandisk USB memory stick. I bought this one:
    SanDisk 16GB USB SD CZ33 Cruzer Fit 16g USB 2 0 Flash Drive SDCZ33 016G Retail | eBay

I tried to copy and save the ISO file again and I tried it, but it didn't work again.

I see others now telling me to not Mount it, but try another way. Can you guys walk me thru what to do now? One person recommended me try a different computer to see if it will boot? Do I just put the stick in a working computer with the bios set up set on USB and see if it works? Does the computer have to be Windows 10? Will it mess anything up? As far as my laptop that is not working right. I don't mind losing any data on it. There is nothing on there that I am worried about. I just didn't want to lose my operating system. I borrowed a friends Windows7 disc. That is the original OS for the broke laptop. I was hoping the disc would restore my old OS. *Sad I don't know how these computers work to well. I greatly appreciate your guys help.

Why not use Rufus to create the flash drive from the downloaded ISO file? That way you can create it for UEFI, MBR and/or GPT.

If you've already considered this then please ignore this post.

Well, I found an old xbox 360 hard drive that my son isn't using as he upgraded to a bigger HDD. I installed it and loaded the Windows 7 disc on my laptop. Now I'm trying to run Windows Update. It ran all night and when I woke up this morning, my laptop turned off. I guess I'll try again and turn off all the shut down features.

However, I still wonder about that other hard drive. I tried to boot the Windows 7 install disc with that old HDD as well and after I went to F12 and changed the boot sequence to the CD rom first, it did try to pull up the disc. However, I get a screen that pops up and tells me to "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD....._" I press any key and nothing happens. The disc drive isn't running any more or anything. I even tried to put this disc and HDD into another laptop and it does the same thing. The other laptop didn't have Windows 7 though. They are both Dell, but the other one ran Windows XP on it. However, now I have Ubuntu. Do you think that HDD is just bad. I don't know what Rufus is.

I gave you a link tpo Rufus. Take a look at it. It helps you create a install flash drive from a ISO file.
