Windows 10: Black Screen

Hi. Last night I upgraded my laptop to Windows 10. After which, I even used it for 4 hours playing with it.

But after booting it up again, it will not show my login screen. It only displays black screen with cursor.

Clicking ctrl + pin/password is useless. I cannot login to my laptop. Please help.

The screen with the Date and Time is the lock screen. Do you click on it and then get the Log on screen?

How long is the black screen?

Is there a HP logo screen before the black screen or is the black scree the only thing before the Lock screen?

The black screen remain for 20-30sec .

black screen is only seen before the lock but sometime before the hp logo also black screen is seen

If you shutdown and then power it up seeing a cold boot will it still stall after the logo screen? Unfortunately most are not aware of the option to create a Recovery Drive using a usb flash drive that works in the same manner as booting up from the Windows dvd with either the Vista, 7, 8, or even 8.1 dvd in the drive in order to run the recovery tools like the Startup Repair. You might have to run that a few times to see any results when it it able to fix and minor issues that is to avoid the need to upgrade over the first 10!

If you created a usb install key and used that for the upgrade you already have what you need to boot from in order to get to the Repair tools option seen on the same screen as the Install Now button. If you opted to run the upgrade from the Media Creation tool to see an immediate online upgrade your option now would be to keep hitting that F8 key at post right after the factory logo screen appears not to bring up the bios boot options screen but to see if you can get the 10 recovery options screen to apear. Otherwise unless you have another 10 upgrade hanging around you may have to upgrade over the upgrade!

 

Nothing happens when I try to hit f8 upon start up. It just go straight to windows 10 logo then the supposed to be login screen which is now all black.

 

I ran into that where right after all the setup files were on and the system restarted it would hang on you! I didn't have a chance at that point to even make the " Recovery Drive " I mentioned before using an 8gb or larger usb flash drive. A 4gb is too small since it packs a lot of recovery options.

I almost had it too with one attempt where it got into the second restart and flopped until finding out the storage drives were the problem since they had seen the boot files and temporary installation folders split up between the two of those which are Sata 3 drives while the pair of OS drives for 7 and 10 are Sata II. Those are now being replaced while I can still use one of them in a usb enclosure.

The thing however was the need to once again try to upgrade over a clean install of 7 I put on the second OS drive in order to preserve the 7 host. When the first upgrade which shouldn't have seen the usual clutter seen with any copy of Windows that has been in use for some time was too buggy and some necessary drivers and softwares wouldn't go on a second upgrade went on over the already activated initial success at getting 10 on. But after 4 days 10 still hadn't activated a second time and I tried out the option used to extend the Vista, 7 30day to 120 day trial period!

If you are able to see 10 go onto another machine or toss a temp install of a previous version(7 with SP1 required, 8, or 8.1) and upgrade over that temp install you can follow the guide there and try running the repair recovery tools before either seeing a PC Refresh or clean install where everything has to go back on fresh all over again. But in the meantime especially if your board uses another F key to enter the bios setup or bring up the boot menu keep trying to tap the F8 even at post to get that recovery screen up where you have a chance to get 10 going again or plan the demise of the present upgrade install.
