Windows 10: Block Windows 10 update assistant/all updates

Since posting this workaround and doing these steps no issues at all. After all when there are no tasks to reinstall the program and no setup program there is nothing unexpected that can happen.

I agree this a very dirty and persistent from Microsoft. I have the right to choose. I understand the threads I'm exposed to but I'm willing to take the risk. I'll use 1511 for a while. When the time comes I'll upgrade . But not now.

 

Great ! Hopefully they dont try anything even dirtier. Ill see tomorrow if it's completely disappeared but I rebooted and nothing happened so im positive it should work

 

maybe by April 2018 perhaps? support for the education & enterprise editions of Win10 version 1511 ends sometime this April.

the v1511 release was actually the first Win10 version I used (I did not install the RTM or 1507 release as that one was buggy) but I was using the Pro version.

any of you guys tried this tool (Windows Update Blocker)?

 

Didnt need to , I basically mixed his tutorial with another one and instead of deleting the w10upgrade tasks I just disabled every task on the orchestrator. I only get updates if I press the button myself , but I found another workaround for that. IF I use the windows hide show updates tool I Can know what updates are there before pressing the button . Can also update windows defender updates thru itself

It amazes me when a person comes in and asks a question, how many people want to lecture on the importance of doing the opposite of what the person wants to do such as trying to force the mindset that we all need to do Windows updates because they know what's best for us or that we should be running scared because our system should be patched like its life and death. Its just a computer guys. There are soooo many reasons for not updating like MS being so presumptions as to change my settings every time they do so after I have gotten my machine they way I want it. Its my machine not MS's.

So I totally get why you would want to stop updates because everything that comes down the pike isn't what you want no matter how much MS thinks it knows what's best for you. I've been running unpatched XP for 20 years and no problems and no Windows 10 updates and no problem, I know what I'm doing I don't need MS or anyone to lecture me otherwise.

That said here is the fix: When you see the Windows update assistant pop up you can right click the network icon in system tray and go to open network and sharing and go to your change adapter settings and disable your connection immediately. This will cause the assistant to say we've encountered and error and it will stop for the time being. Now go back and re-enable the network adapter. Now go and download Free Zone Alarm and install the firewall and disable windows firewall. Now click on the Zone Alarm icon in system tray and open it. Click view details under firewall. Click the programs link under application control. Scroll down and look for Windows Update Assistant or Update Assistant now go to windows control panel and uninstall windows update assistant before you kill it because otherwise zone alarm wont allow you to uninstall. Once the uninstall is complete then right click beside windows update assistant under Trust Level and select "Kill" then confirm with a "Yes" and you will never see Windows Update again. You can also do this with the Windows Update in the list or at the very least set outbound and inbound rules limiting Windows Update.

 

Some folks tjhink me having to rebuild my computer and hope my files had been backed up. The 'lovely' I didn't need Composer update crashed my computer. I managed to get into and undo the update, then I could get my computer working again. After 33 years of doing tech support I am fed up with MS pretending I need stuff I have no use for. Keeps reinstalling Defender. i use pcmatic, a much better program than MS Defender.

I'll be using the windows update blocker to keep poor quality updates off my machine.

Admin still has to go into

c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and delete everything in there, or it will keep trying.

I also just have to say...because I cannot help myself...pcmatic is an incredibly inferior product to the new Windows Defender...I've had nothing but headaches from pcmatic, it makes me absolutely rage when I find it installed on a machine hahaha.

 

No problems with it at my end. And the software I used before was letting in a trojan once a year. PCmatic's failing is it has to be online.
