Okay... Keeping all personal files option...

Started and Black screen now ... for 20 mins plus.

Is this correct or should I boot it up?

If so, with or without USB still in?

EDIT: Yes it came alive and is still alive and kicking... 59% now !

Okay. There should not be a black screen. That may be a graphics driver or graphics card problem.
Once you have the operating system installed you must check the drive.
Then you will test the graphics.

    Nice progress.
Please post the URL into the thread for the computer's drivers.
What is the age of the computer?
Are all of the components the same age or were some replaced?
Were you having problems with the drive?
Do you have the files backed up?
Have you made a backup image?

So there is more or persistent corruption after the in place upgrade repair?

    1) backup all files to another drive or to the cloud
    2) download and install Macrium and make a backup image of the drive
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free
    3) place the backup image onto another drive or into the cloud.
    4) if there are problems with the drive Macrium may not be able to make an image of the drive and may display an error.
    5) create a brand new restore point
    6) run HD Tune with
    a) health scan
    b) benchmark
    c) error scan (run the full scan: this may take several hours)
    7) run chkdsk /x /f /r after the above steps.

The first time you had run sfc /scannow it was not able to complete.
This time it did complete but was not able to fix the corruption.
So rerun the 3 Dism commands and see if it fixes the corruption.

The box is maybe 4/5 years old.

Have a new Nvidia card GT610 in it now instead of the onboard which I think was one of my major problems.
Nothing else has been changed. Everything seems to be running quit fast now.

Still find that some links in the right click Start Men such as Events etc and I get this message..
Admin has blocked you from running apps mme.exe and eventvwr.exe

No haven't had any visable trouble with drives, so didn't expect to see drive probs. All are auto defraged.

Major trouble was boot up and blue screen atikpag but I think that was the onboard graphics now not in use.

Yes I had a clone done before we started this update, but I will do another now up until now.

Will check other drives now to see how current backups are.

I use SyncBack Pro on other drives and Acronis TI for image and clones.

I'm not sure what URL you mean to post.

    When should I do these?

    1) chkdsk /x /f/ r
    2) HD Tune error scan

EDIT.. Just seen this under Security and Maintenance
    Reconnect Your Drive
Your file history drive wasa discionnectd for too long.
Reconnect itthentap or click to save copies of your files

    ------------
Shall I do the disms before #6 etc above?

    Perform the 3 dism commands.
If that fixes the corruption then run the sfc /scannow to confirm.
Sometimes the sfc /scannow may display corruption again.
Then run sfc /scannow 3 times to see if it can fix itself.
And sometime there can be a loop where it does not fix itself even when Dism completes successfully.

Once you have completed the above commands check the status of the drive with HD Tune.
Once you have all of the testing completed then run the chkdsk command.
All drives should be checked with both HD Tune and chkdsk to see their status as they are approximately 4 - 5 years old.

This had happened to multiple computers either earlier this year or late last year.
To check the operating system on a regular basis you will need to use the dism commands.
Once the drive is fully evaluated with HD Tune and chkdsk /x /f /r you can perform another in place upgrade repair.
