Windows 10: Blue screen/black screen while updating

Upon upgrading to Windows 10 any attempt to install a graphics card driver newer than NVIDIA 9.18.13.2049 results in SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

I actually had to remove the current driver at the time and use the disk to install the original.


That's been working so I left it alone.

Until the the Windows version 2004 update. Which results in a black screen with the little waiting circles. Tried to have it update overnight and 8ish hours later it was still stuck on the black screen.

Thought it might be the old driver causing problems.

Screen goes blue / black on start of atitool

i tried 0.26 and the new beta but its the same... if i start atitool the screen immidiately goes blue or black and i have to reboot... the computer doesnt really hang but the screen seems to be lost.
any suggestions? i dont have any other programs running, i dont even want to OC my card i just want to have control over the fan speed, i have a x1800xt btw.
