Windows 10: Bluetooth audio quality suffers greatly when using microphone

Whenever I'm in a Zoom meeting the audio quality from other sources like YouTube or Spotify becomes so bad they're incomprehensible. I haveMade sure that my microphone input is only coming from my laptop microphone because I know that using the Bluetooth internal microphone makes audio quality suffer. I've done this in Zoom and in the audio settings in Windows.Disabled "hands free telephony" for my Bluetooth headphonesI used this exact same setup last year Same headphones, same setting configurations, except now I have a new laptop, and it doesn't seem to want to work. Also in the Zoom call

Bluetooth Sound Quality is Terrible

lenovo support forums I've fixed my problem!

• Right click the speaker icon in the system tray by the clock
  
• • Click 'Playback devices'
• Change the default to the 'headphones'

the lenovo support link has screen shots, fyi.

"Some bluetooth devices have
2 modes: Regular listening device and a "handsfree" mode where you can use both the audio and microphone. If you somehow got switched to
handsfree mode, then the audio quality will be much worse since some of the
bluetooth bandwidth will be taken up for the microphone."

 

Audio quality drops when using microphone

Bluetooth devices have 2 modes: Stereo and Hands-free, when the microphone is used, the Bluetooth device goes from the Stereo mode to the Hands-free mode.

The hands-free mode has a lower audio quality compared to the Stereo mode. That is why when you join a call, the audio quality drops. This is a limitation of the Bluetooth protocols on these devices.
