Windows 10: bookmarks.html file

is their any way to generate a bookmarks.html file outside of the browser. I had to do a reinstall window 10 home 64bit


I forget to export my bookmarks the only thing I have is a favorites folder with all the .url files copied on an external drive.

ANSWER

After reading many posts, that lead me nowhere, I followed the instructions below to export and import Edge bookmarks from one computer unto another computer. (Please ignore the negative replies to this post. Also, I am not endorsing any 3rd party software
or browser. Below is just a simple means, or work-around, of performing an export until Edge is hopefully updated in the future.)

Edited June 7, 2016: So here is the answer to my own question (that so many other people also had).

Method 1: Go to the top right hand side where you see the 3 dots (...), otherwise know as "More". Then go to the option that states "Open with Internet Explorer". Then the Internet Explorer (IE) browser automatically opens up. Follow the steps as usual to
export from IE. You can save the file as either HTML or HTM file extension.

Alternative Method 2: (First) Open Chrome browser, and from address bar, type "chrome://settings/importData". Follow instructions of pop-up dialogue box.

(Second) Open another Chrome browser tab, and from address bar, type "chrome://bookmarks". Click on the word "Organize" and choose "Export bookmarks to HTML file". You can save the file as either HTML or HTM file extension.

If it is your goal to import the Edge bookmarks from another Edge browser which is on another computer, then follow steps 1, 2 & 3:

Step 1 : Open Chrome browser, and from address bar, type "chrome://bookmarks". Click on the word "Organize" and choose "Import bookmarks from HTML file". (use the HTML file obtained above)

Step2: Open Edge browser, and follow the screen shots as shown below:





Step 3: Choose Chrome and click import.

Internet Explorer > File > Import and export > etc. > Import from another browser > If Firefox isn't listed, export Fx Bookmarks to an HTML file and import that file.

Use multiple bookmark files

Martin here: my backed up bookmarks file (~1800 bookmarks) is under 500 kB, but the places.sqlite file in my profile (C:\Users\mnger\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\losj3o06.default) is 25MB. Looking inside it with a hex viewer shows it contains a lot more than simply the links - I have no idea why. However, if yours is 26GB, then simple scaling suggests some 2 millions bookmarks and a backup file of 500MB. I expect that is unlikely, but if your places file is that large, then it contains much more than links.

Have you tried backing up your bookmarks and checked the file size?

Following on from my first response, I thought of suggesting you could keep different copies of sqlite and drop them into your profile as required, but could not recommend it as I didn't know how well that would work. But after asking about your bookmark backup, another thought occurs: you could backup all your current bookmarks, then throw out all but one 'category' and then back that category up with an appropriate label. Repeat for each category, then simply restore the backup to match your current needs.

But you could achieve the same with folders, simply moving the current category to the top of the bookmark menu by choosing an appropriate name - or even burying the unwanted ones under a folder beginning with z (so they are at the bottom of the list). Lots of possibilities...
