Boot device from second SSD slot in stead of defect original SSD

Hi,Unfortunately my original SSD or slot of my HP Zbook Studio G4 is defect and results in sudden crashes. Therefore I would like to install a new SSD in my second slot and make my laptop run from this. I have no experience in this field, so how would one do that starting from an empty new SSD?

    :)

  2. Cannot boot from SSD through SATA slot

    Thanks for your reply.

The ssd already has a bootable windows installed. I have tried to boot it via usb. The problem is it doesn't run when plugged into the sata slot.

The original hard disk is Toshiba's MQ01ABD100, SATA up to 6.0 Gbit/s, and the new ssd is SATA Rev. 3.0 (6Gb/s) – with backwards compatibility to SATA Rev. 2.0 (3Gb/s). It seem the ssd is supported by the motherboard. And the motherboard can recognize it
when I select where to boot windows. The screen turn black after I select to boot with the ssd

  3. Cannot boot windows 10 SSD after having installed Windows 11

    1. Took original 512GB NVMe SSD with windows 10 install out of M.2_1 slot
    2. Installed a 4TB NVMe SSD into M.2_1 slot
    3. Installed Windows 11 from iso (using Ventoy)
    4. Installed another new 2TB NVMe SSD into M.2_2 slot
    5. Plugged original 512GB NVMe SSD into a USB3 NVMe/NGFF adapter. It shows as a JMicron adapter.
    6. Booted to Clonezilla iso (using Ventoy)
    7. Followed instructions in Clonezilla and cloned contents of 512GB SSD to 2TB SSD
Now, regardless of Custom Lithium Ion Battery Pack Manufacturer being enabled in the motherboard's UEFI settings:

    • 2TB drive won't boot, with a 0xc000000e winload.efi error.
    • original 512GB drive won't boot with a similar error, even if I move it from the JMicron USB3 adapter into the M.2_2 slot
    • In the JMicron USB3 adapter the original 512GB drive also gives this error when attempting to boot from it on another computer. This is the hint for me that booting the working SSD from the USB3 adapter is probably bad, and also that this may have caused my clonezilla session to perform a bad clone.
    • Booting the 4TB drive to boot to Windows 11 still works. I am so far trying to avoid physically removing this drive from M.2_1 slot because I want to keep its thermal pad intact.
My hope is that if I do put the original 512GB drive back in the M.2_1 slot that it might start to work again. I cannot fathom what the Win11 install or Clonezilla session could have possibly done to damage the contents of the 512GB drive.

  4. Boot device from second SSD slot in stead of defect original SSD

Cloned SSD not booting on Windows

Greg, I was successful in cloning my SSD using Macrium Reflect and was able boot my SSD from SATA 2 using F12. I had to select the SSD and click on second Windows Manager option. I had a successful boot from the SSD so I removed the HDD from SATA 0 and unplugged its power cable and connected the SSD to SATA 0 with power. By using F12 I was able to boot from the SSD. I noticed that the 1st Boot Device no longer has Windows Boot Manager option and its not listed as an option. How do I get the original boot options restored for the five Boot Devices? See below for the latest Disk Management display.
