Windows 10: Booting from USB drive questions

OK I have been trying for the last 2 days to boot from a usb drive on my computer, read some of the tutorials on how to do this method. Nothing seems to work so far. Been trying the recovery method, then choosing Advance setup.
That works to the point of showing my choices, if I choose the boot to uefi settings then choose boot options from my menu, usb option is never listed. If I use a dvd, then its always listed as an option.

Now this is the strange part for me, Also listed at the advance setup menu at boot up is TWO UEFI RealTek PCie GBE Family Controller's on my menu. one says IPv4 the 2nd one says IPv6 Should I show two family controllers on the boot menu??? Is this normal?? Computer is an HP Envy Desktop 810-160

Bottom line is this computer is 2014 model, so kinda new, and I have not found anyway yet to boot to any usb drive yet. Boots from dvd drive with no problem. Fast boot is off.

Sorry, I just read your question again and if you only get this error when the USB drive is plugged in - disable the options 'USB Boot' and Boot to Removable Devices' so your system does not try to boot from the flash drive . . .

 

Windows 10 System Repair Disk won't boot

Dennis, I copied the Windows 7 repair disk to a USB drive according to your instructions.
I am still not able to boot from the CD drive or the USB drive.
Perhaps the difficulty is due to my boot setup.
I have the secure boot disabled, the legacy boot enabled, and have added the CD, EFI, Boot selection in the add menu.
I have attempted to boot from the CD UEFI and legacy options.
What is your boot setup, and what boot option do you select from the boot menu?
Perhaps the difficulty I have is interference from the Symantec System Recovery 2013 R2 that I have installed.
That application produces a startup options screen.
There is one option to boot from a CD and another to boot from a USB device.
The CD option always shows the error message, “disk error or non system disk”.
The choice for booting from a USB device shows no drive to boot from.
What is your boot setup and what boot option do you select?
I would like to hear your comments, since I seem intent on solving this question.
I believe you made a comment that you are able to boot from the system repair disk from a USB drive and also a CD drive.
At this time I am unable to resolve this question.

On my Laptop I have to enable "Legacy emulation" mode to support USB before the OS is loaded. If I don't have that enabled when I open the boot order menu nothing is listed for USB even though there is a stick in the port with an OS on it.

I leave it enabled because if you want to use a USB keyboard in the BIOS/UEFI settings it won't see the keyboard without it after a cold boot.

 

In my HP PC, all that is needed is to keep hitting F9 key after powering the PC on to get to the boot option screen. But as Milesahead mentioned above, you need to have USB Legacy support enabled in BIOS/UEFI. You might also wanna try enabling CSM or disabling Secure Boot. Different PCs, different issues.

 

Well ok I understand what your saying but my keyboard is a usb wireless key board and mouse, and they work fine, with legacy off....????

 

If it is not seeing the USB stick when it is in the port in boot order options I would try it just for grins. My USB keyboard works too with CSM off. But even my UEFI WinPE USB stick is not recognized with USB legacy off.

 

Ok guys I went into my bios settings, and checked on some settings. In order to turn on legacy support feature I had to turn off Secure boot options 1st. Then got a big red warning msg, asking me if I really wanted to do this. I said ok, then I after that I could turn on the legacy support feature. Also saw that Fast boot was enabled, so I also turned that option off too. Saved changes, rebooted, then another new screen popped up warning me that secure boot option was turned off, and if I wanted to proceed with that option, I had to enter the 4 digit code that was displayed, and hit the enter key. WoW, my hp sure didn't like me turning off the secure boot feature at all. So I entered the 4 digit # hit enter, and booted back to my desktop. Took 21 sec's bty, faster than my last boot time of 24 sec's. Once on my desktop, I restarted computer again, hit the F9 key a few times, AND then for the 1st time EVER I saw more boot options than I have NeVER seen!!!!! One of them was my usb drive that I had loaded with Macrium Reflect on it. Choose that option, and for the 1st time, ever, it booted to Macrium on my usb drive!!!!

Hi OldMike65! Is your Windows 10 system 32-bit or 64-bit? If it's running a Windows 10 64-bit OS, you have to create a 64-bit version of WinPE.

 

You just lucked out with F9 key. It can be any other F-key. *Smile Good to hear you are all good.
But just remember, if in the future you are troubleshooting your Windows OS and having issues doing it, you might wanna enable back secure boot first. I am thinking, maybe your main problem is just the fast boot being enabled. It makes the post skip all connected devices. You might wanna try and see if turning back secure boot on and keeping fast boot off is enough to get you to boot up with your USB stick.

Now, you can also run Linux Live on USB. *Smile

 

My UEFI WinPE boot stick is Macrium also. So far that is the only USB stick I can boot on my Windows 8 Laptop without enabling CSM. But anyway, glad it worked out for you. *Smile

 

Well again I understand what your saying, but now you are confusing me a little. 1st you tell me I need Legacy Support ON to be able to boot from any usb port. Remember?? Well in order to be able to turn ON my legacy support feature in my bios, the bios tells me that I HAVE to TURN off secure boot feature!! Now if I turn back on my secure boot option, it will also turn off legacy support. <------!!!!! So now your telling me I don't need legacy support feature on, and that all I needed to do was turn off fast boot option off, and then I still MIGHT be able to boot from my usb device???
I can try this of course, but just confused by telling me I need legacy support on, then telling me I don't need legacy support on, just turn fast boot off????????

 

Ok tried turning my secure boot back on in my bios, once that is back on, legacy support feature is off, like I said earlier, with no legacy support, my usb boot stick, is not recognized. My HP computer will only recognize my dvd if their is a disk in the drive.

So I have turned off secure boot feature, and then turned back on the legacy support feature in my bios. Now I have back again all my choices to boot from. If their is another way to boot from any of my usb ports, I haven't found it. So far only way is to have legacy support on, secure boot off.

OldMike, you might want to check that your USB flash drive has been formatted FAT32 when you created the Macrium WinPE Rescue on it. It seems UEFI boot of these expects or prefers FAT32. I have followed that (Newer Dell, and an older Acer, not HP) guideline and find I'm not having to switch in and out of Legacy versus UEFI/Secure to boot either laptop from it.
