    Current state of my laptop

I have a kinda old Dell Inspiron 7537 laptop powered by an i7 CPU, 16GB RAM and 1TB HDD. When I upgraded it to Windows 10 in 2015 it took about 10-20 seconds to boot. I used it pretty much every day for a year, then barely used it a few times a year for the next 2 years and now I'm back to daily usage. About a year ago I noticed that the boot time has shot up to about ~10-12 minutes! Since then I tried to do some basic troubleshooting methods, but none of them seemed to work.

    Things I've already tried:

    • First thing I did was to completely reinstall Windows 10. It had already been 4 years since the last reinstall so I was like sure, why not. This sped things up by maybe 2-3 minutes.
    • Updated drivers
    • Disabled basically every startup program
    • Defragmentation
    • Turned off fast startup
    • Clean boot
    • Safe mode (maybe 2-3 minutes difference)

None of the above made any difference apart from safe mode and reinstalling Windows. But even with these two "solutions", the computer is stuck on the spinning loading bar welcome screen for about 9 minutes.

One important point is that my programs don't start that slowly. If I click on Chrome, it launches in 1-2 seconds. Most programs don't launch as fast as 5 years ago, but still pretty ok.

Now I've run out of ideas and I just don't know what to do with my PC. Are there any other tricks I could try? Because I dread restarting my PC everytime I have to use it. Would it be worth it to buy an SSD? I know it can speed things up, but since most programs run pretty smoothly I'm not sure if it would majorly improve the boot time. Should I try another operating system i.e. Linux?
