Windows 10: Both external and built in microphones are not working on my laptop running windows 10.

I have a Dell Inspiron 7591 2 in 1. I bought it recently and just discovered that the mic isn't working. I updated all the relevant audio drivers, bios and updated windows too! I checked privacy settings and troubleshooting also didn't help!

The inbuilt microphone array is intel sst! Diagnosis says it's working perfectly!

When I troubleshoot external mic, it says the jack is not connected!

I set the default devices on control panel sound settings and even that was of no use!

I tried using my phone' mic by using WO mic and even then tha laptop is not picking up any sound! I have so many online classes to attend and I'm helpless! Please help me!

I suggest you to run a Hardware and Devices troubleshooter.

Please follow the below mentioned steps to run
Hardware and Devices troubleshooter:

• Search for Troubleshooting in the
  Search box, and run it.
• Select view all in the left pane of troubleshooting Window.
• Click on the Hardware and Devices, and follow the
  on-screen instructions.

Built in microphone not working

I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if it helps

Method 1: I suggest you to set microphone as default device and check.

• 
  Right click on the volume icon in the system tray and then click "Recording devices"
  
• 
  Right click on the blank space in the popped up window and then select "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices".
  
• 
  Right click on Microphone and then click "Enable".
  
• 
  Highlight the microphone and then choose "Set as Default Device".
  
• 
  Click Apply and OK.
  

Step 2: Make sure that the Microphone is not disabled.

• 
  Make sure that the Microphone is not disabled. Follow the steps given to check that:
  
• 
  Right click on the volume icon and select “Recording devices”.
  
• 
  Now, Right Click on an empty space and select, “Show disconnected devices” and “Show disabled devices”.
  
• 
  Make sure that the Microphone is not disabled.
  

And also update the audio drivers from the manufacturer web site and install.

Windows 10 has a built-in troubleshooter to check and fix issues with hardware and devices. I would suggest you to run this troubleshooter to check if the issue is with your Microphone. Refer these steps:

• 1. Press Windows key +X, select Control panel
  
  2. Change the view by option on the top right to Large icons
  
  3. Click on troubleshooting and click on the view all option on the left panel
  
  4. Run the Hardware and devices.

Check if it helps.



If the issue persists, I suggest you to download and install the latest audio drivers from the computer manufacturer website and check if it helps.
