  2. How to empty external drive using recycle bin on Windows 10 computer.

    Hi Peter,

You may not see this, as it is an older post. I had the same question, and finally came across the answer. If you are still wondering, then hopefully this will help!

NOTE: This will delete the contents of your HDD recycle bin, and the files you have deleted will become unrecoverable by normal means.

    1. Plug in your external HDD

    2. Go to Windows Explorer

    3. Right click on the external HDD and choose Properties

    4. Under the General Tab (Default when you open properties) click Disk Cleanup

    5. Click the check box for Recycle Bin

    6. Click Ok

    7. Confirm that you want to delete the contents of the recycle bin

Voila, you should have your HDD space back that was being taken up by the recycle bin. I just got 70GB back!

    Cheers,

    Tim

  3. How do I restore files from the recycle bin of a system image? (windows 7 backup)

none of my systems have a functional recycle bin I disable it on my systems for privacy and performance

so I can't check right now

last time I did anything with an offline recycle bin was for some external HDDs last year for someone else

they lost some files and access to the recycle bins due to computer change (Aha, NTFS permissions problem)

using robocopy with the Local System Account Command Prompt in XP

I pulled the recycle bin folders manually off of the external HDDs to FAT32 storage which strips the NTFS permissions extended attributes

only thing I can find online is about $I(random) and $R(random) files

you have the $R(random) showing in the list but I'm not seeing any $I(random) files

see if this helps sort it out

bothersome recycle bin error message in external HDD -how to fix?

Is the external HD being plugged into the same usb port every time? And, is the external HD, if being plugged into the same usb port every time, assigned a drive letter?

Just to verify, did you use the command below:

    RD /S /Q H:\$Recycle.bin

If so, then the message indicates that the "H:\$Recycle.bin" file has already been deleted.

Do you still get the error message from the 1st post now?
