Windows 10: Bought a new computer; I wanted to set it up with my account, but don't move any old data,...

I recently bought a new computer, and wanted to use this opportunity to have a blank computer with no saved info that pops up, i.e. emails, passwords, card info and didn't want any of my old apps, etc. How do I use my account to have this new computer, but not have any old info added.

Putting an old laptop computer back to ‘as bought’ settings

Hello, Microsoft Community.

I am returning a laptop computer, as my organisation has bought a new laptop computer for me to use as the old one was having problems.

I want then, to return the computer in its ‘as bought’ condition without needing to carry out a factory set condition, if you get me.

On my old computer, I have uninstalled all the programs and deleted all the files that had been installed and added to the computer.

I have a Microsft account and I notice that both of my ‘devices’ are listed on my Microsoft account ‘Devices’ page.

However, I notice that when I choose any of my settings, such as cursors, sounds etc., they are saved in my Microsoft account details so that I can use them across computers when I log on with my lock screen. That is, when I attempt to put back the ‘personalisations’
on the old computer (colour, sounds, cursors etc.), they do indeed change on my new computer!

That being noticed and said, how do I remove ‘me’ (presumably that means my Microsoft account) from my old computer, or do I just remove the old ‘device’ from my Microsoft account ‘Devices’ page?

Hi Rod,

First, you have to delete the account that has alias using your main profile. To do this, kindly follow these steps:

Step 1: Steps to Remove a User Account in Settings

1. Open Settings.
   
2. Click Accounts and then select Family & other users.
   
3. Select the user you want to delete under Other users and click on Remove.
   
4. Accept the UAC (User Account Control) prompt.
   
5. Select Delete account and data if you wish to delete account and the data and follow onscreen instructions.

Step 2: Steps to Delete a User Account in Command Prompt

1. Press Windows + X keys from the keyboard, select Command Prompt (Admin).
   
2. Type net user and hit Enter to list the user accounts on your device.
   
3. Type net user "User account " /delete and hit Enter to delete the user account.
   

Note: When you want to delete a user account from your computer:

• You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to delete a user account.
  
• You will not be able to delete a user account that is currently signed in. You will need to sign out the user first.
  
• Be sure to always have at least one enabled administrator account on the PC to avoid not being able to perform actions that require administrator rights.
  

To Transfer the files from the old user account to the new one, here are the steps:

1. Go to File Explorer. Under This PC, select Local (C drive.
   
   
   
   
   
2. Select Users.
   
   
   
   
   
3. Look for the username folder of the old account (ex: admin).
   
   
   
   
   
4. Copy all the folders from the old user account or you can choose which to copy.
   
   
   
   
   
5. Look for the new user account folder and paste the one you copied. Highlight all the folders and click paste or you can press Ctrl + A and Ctrl + V to copy and paste the items. This will copy all the files and folders from the
   old user account to the new user account.

You may decide whether to keep the old user account or delete it. The old user account will also consume space on your computer.
