Windows 10: Bought Windows Pro from Windows Store now get Activation error 0x803F7001

Hi everyone,


I have a Windows activation error.


Here is my history:

• Bought a laptop this year with Windows 10 Home pre-installed (from the official Lenovo website)
• I have opened the Windows Store app on my computer and purchased Windows 10 Pro
• My computer has then been updated to Pro without any problem
• Just after the update (I noticed it after 1 day so it might have been right away) I saw the activation error message

Here are some details that might be relevant:

• In the troubleshooting I see that the error is 0x803F7001
• I'm in Hong Kong and I made sure that both my account and my Windows region are set to Hong Kong. On this topic, the price is actually displayed and paid in Hong Kong Dollars. (this might be relevant because of another issue that I noticed below)
• On the web, in my Microsoft account details I see the purchase of Windows 10 pro
• My Windows and the MS website are logged-in to the same MS account (I checked but I might not have done everything properly)
• I saw some post saying that after purchase I should get the Windows Pro key by email. I haven't received this key... but I've received the confirmation email for my purchase
• I saw some post saying that it's normal to not have a key because the key is linked to my MS account (this is why I checked that my account is registered to the MS account)
• Still on the MS account topic, I didn't setup my MS account on this PC on my first setup (6 months ago) but I logged into the account before the purchase (a few months ago)

Some issues that I think are linked:

• When I check my order history, I can see Windows 10 Pro... then if I click in the Windows 10 Pro link it tells me that the page is not found
• On an issue related to the regions I'm also trying to buy an Office 365 subscription and I can't make it work if I choose Hong Kong as region. In the process after trying to add a payment method I get a page not found issue

My guess is that there might be some region-related issues but I know little about this kind of issues. I've experimented with a change of region settings but it didn't fix anything.


This is what I can say about my issue so far. Of course I would happily give more details.

Windows 10 will not activate Error code 0x803F7001


Possibly there can be the problem with Microsoft activation Server, so your Windows 10 is not activated. In this scenario, you need to wait and verify if it is the issue from Microsoft’s side. But if you are getting error code 0x803f7001, you can also try these steps:

1. Open Settings app. Then go to Update and security > Activation screen > Change product.
2. Type your Windows edition product key and click Next.
3. You’ll get We couldn’t activate Windows error message.
4. Retry steps 1-3 then type your 25-characters unique product key.
5. Wait for the process to complete, Windows 10 is activated.

MS rip off maybe..

Well that's weird. I've just rencently changed platform ( went from haswell to Ryzen) and all I had to was to to click on modify the product key, enter the windows 8.1 pro key that i bought 5 years ago, and voilà. Windows 10 pro was activated. However in my case my error code wasn't the same, it was 0x803f7001 for me, looks like the step aren't the same for you.
