Windows 10: Box Drive's placeholder file's custom icons or overlay icons

Hi,Based on https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/shell/how-to-create-icon-handlers article we have implemented a change of custom icons of various files in the Windows file explorer. When same is being used for box synced folder placeholder file's callback for IPersistFile::Load and IExtractIcon::GetIconLocation are not coming, hence it shows the default icon that is assigned by Windows in file explorer. But when the user clicks that placeholder file or hovers over the placeholder file, I assume the file is getting hydrated and we get a proper callback as the File's actual

Icon Overlays less than 15

Hi fantasiom,

I read from an article on ghacks (link below) that there are two places in the registry that the overlays are being "loaded" from.

• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIcon‌OverlayIdentifiers
• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explor‌er\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers

The second location is for 32-bit applications running on 64-bit windows. OneDrive is storing the same 6 ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers in both locations. I suspect this is because the OneDrive client is 32-bit, and windows explorer is 64-bit. It appears that
the six overlays in the Wow6432Node are loaded first leaving 9 in the other location.

OneDrive will ask to "install icons" if it not all it's icons are not in the top 15. Installing icons means adding spaces in front of the name in the registry so it appears first alphabetically.

I would suggest adding spaces in front of the "BoxSyncNotSynced", "BoxSyncProblem", and "BoxSyncSynced" registry keys so they appear ahead of or next after the six OneDrive overlay icons. I don't use file locking so I don't feel the other two BoxSync icons
are useful.

Essentially the problem is that the ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers is limited to 15 and One Drive is setup to use 12 of them currently. OneDrive has introduced a new status column instead of overlay icons, but it seems for now this is limited to files-on-demand
functionality.

 

hard drive icon?

Hi, i am trying to change my hard drive icon and have never done it before. I searched and found a little guide but it didnt work. I downloaded an icon from iconarchive.com and so its a single icon in an ico file type.

It opened notepad and typed:

[autorun]

icon=C:\"the file extenstion".ico

and saved it as "C:\autrun.inf"

but this is how it turned out:






can anyone help me with this?

 

How to remove/resize double arrow (blue box) overlay on file icons

Please reply: Are you using a third party antivirus software?



These icon overlays occur when you have a third party antivirus installed which created a backup, thus showing a checkmark or double arrow (blue box) overlay along with the icon. The icon displayed in the screenshot indicates that the file has been changed
by its last back.

Therefore, If you do not wish to see these overlays I would suggest you to go to the third party antivirus settings and
remove/uncheck Backup status indicators.
