Brand new laptop not performing as it should.

    Hello.
I just got myself a brand new (2 weeks ago) MSI GP72VR 6RF gaming laptop.
And i was full of hope and thoughts on games i could play with high/maxed settings with good fps, but there has been nothing but a disappointment.
From games like CSGO, Diablo 3 and even hearthstone i get low and fluctuating fps.
CSGO goes from the low 40fps up to 130fps at some points, with an average at 60.
Diablo 3 never goes above 70fps and drops down to 40 constant.
Hearthstone i can`t really see my fps in numbers, but i can see on the screen that it isn't stable at a high frame rate as it should be.
It also feels like there is some sort of vsync enabled on every game i play. And as far as i know there is no vsync or gsync enabled.
This laptop is ALOT better than my old desktop PC with an old i5 CPU and a 7900 series AMD GPU, but still my desktop outperform this laptop at any game i throw at it.

Changing the graphic settings in the different games gave no improvements what so ever.
I have tried to change the power settings to both high, low and balanced with no difference.
I have also tried to change back and forth between the integrated Intel graphic card and the Nvidia 1060 graphic card with no difference in performance.
graphic driver is up to date, same with the chipset driver and Nahimic, Dragon Center, SCM.
Temperatures looks ok at aorund 30-40 on idle and around 60 under load.
The only thing i have yet to try is a full format and reinstall of W10.

Oh and another question a little of topic. On the laptop system specs it says that it has a 120hz screen, but with (optional) on the side.
what does that mean? do i have a 120hz screen or not?
And also, i tried to run 3Dmark to see what score i could get, but before i could run it, it told me to turn off G-sync, witch i cant find anywhere.
In Nvidia control panel it only gives me the 3D settings tap and not display, stereo or video.
and in the 3D settings tap i can only disable Vsync. and that does not help

Thanks for your time and hope for some good response that can lead to solution.

So in short, i feel like the laptop is not giving me the power it should

    :)

  2. Reset Laptop - Nothing Works as it Should

    Hi there,

Thanks for your reply. My apologies for my delayed response, I've just really had enough of this laptop.

I can access Microsoft Programs via the 'Get Office' app. I can't sign in to my microsoft account via that app, but I can access the features of Microsoft.

No error message is appearing, it simply reads 'Can't reach this page'.

I've now also discovered the I've lost my Administrator Privileges, though I'm the only account user.

I'm no longer able to access Origin after a recent attempted update of the app, so I can't use that.

The wireless network window continues to appear blank, as does the Cortana/Search window. I type what I want to search and the screen remains blank.

I'm really quite lost and disheartened. Any tips from here would be marvellous, otherwise there's going to be funeral for this laptop.

    Many Thanks.

Reset Laptop - Nothing Works as it Should

    Thank you for the update.

We have some workarounds and solution that you can try in the meantime.

Microsoft is installed under Programs and Features, but it isn't listed in the start menu. I also can't access my microsoft account as it says 'problems connecting to the server'. When I hit refresh, it then presents the sign in page and I enter
my account info, but then shows an error page.

    • Can you access Office programs? If yes, try right-clicking on the program like Excel, Word, and PowerPoint and see if you can pin them to the Start menu.
    • Are you getting a different error message after refreshing the web page and entering your account credentials?
    • Can you send us a screen of the error page you're getting after entering the account username and password?

No error message when Store crashes

    • Try resetting Windows Store cache and see if the issue will persist:
    • Close Windows Store app if running.
    • Press Windows key and type wsreset.
    • Right-click on wsreset and select Run as administrator.
    • Enter the required information and click Yes.
    • Store and Command Prompt window will open, it will automatically close once Windows Store cache has been reset.

I've troubleshooted the network adapters etc, nothing seems unusual. Carried out various updates.

    • Is the Wireless Network screen still showing a blank/black screen after update?

Update us with the outcome so we can provide further assistance.

Hi, you have both integrated graphics (e.g. Intel HD) and the Nvidia card, so I think you will be using Nvidia Optimus.

I've just come across this on mine.. and the problem is to get applications running on the discrete card. You can try making that selection in the Nvidia control panel (3D, Manage 3D settings) but... it depends (in my limited understanding) whether the program in question has been written with Optimus in mind.

You could also try GPU-Z (free) to see what's happening.

Movavi's video convertor is interesting in this respect- some format settings show the card that will be used (CUDA). But despite doing what they suggested- using the control panel as above- only the Intel integrated graphics was offered and used.

(You only get the 3D settings in Nvidia 'cos the other functions that would otherwise be shown there are allocated to the Intel HD graphics). This is all in the interests of lower power consumption.

Having written to a couple of other CUDA convertor companies, they say they are working on Optimus compatibility.

I talked to PC Specialists - and the agent was very aware of this second time I spoke to him. He indicated a number of things had to be true for the Nvidia card to be used.

This benchmark Unigine_Superposition-1.0 should exercise your Nvidia card- you can see that with GPU-Z. (All that gave us was confidence the card was working).

My feeling- unless I was running a posh modern game (which I'm not planning on) - my Nvidia card will go unused.

Should just be a case of

    • NVIDIA Control Panel.
    • Manage 3D Settings
    • Program Settings.
    • Click "Add" button.
    • Browse to and select the application executable you wish to use the Nvidia graphics.
    • select the preferred graphics processor to use from the drop down.

That works for most people I know.

Personally I think that Optimus was the wrong way to implement a discrete graphics option as you can't disable the Intel Graphics as that feeds the discrete card, think back to 3dfx and the original Voodoo Graphics accelerator, which was fed from the existing card.

    1) Looks like 2 types of display panel are available, my guesses are in brackets.
    a) 1920x1080 (60 Hz TN) ?
    b) 1920x1080 120 Hz, 5 ms, Wide-View (IPS) ?
You have tell us what you ordered, option b) I suspect is quite a bit more expensive.

The smaller Nvidia Control Panel is typical of Laptops using Nvidia Optimus switching associated with M series Mobile graphics chipsets and drivers.

Optimus is a non issue in this case as the games mentioned are aware and 'on the list'.

There is a contradiction in that you say it's a GTX1060 a Destop Graphics card, these I understand cannot use Optimus which applies to M series.

Perhaps do some hardware checking to see what you actually have got. I suspect it is a GTX1060(Notebook). They seem to have changed the label from an M.

The Notebook or M versions don't perform quite as well as the Desktop versions which take oodles of power.

It works if the program is 'Optimus aware'. Otherwise, as my PC Specialists guy said, the OS can be misleading in this respect.
I tried exactly what you suggested for the Movavi video convertor- and the basic exe was then shown as running on the GPU, according to the panel displayed by rt clicking on the Nvidia tray icon (which the PC Specialist guy said tends to be unreliable).

  8. Brand new laptop not performing as it should.

Wow, I have a similar laptop and have none of the problems you have. (see my spec.'s) Have you checked for Bio's and firmware updates? I know there's at least a firmware update, well, there was for me. Have you used the Geforce Experience to optimize the games you're playing? You have changed the settings in the Nvidia Control Panel to use just the 1060 correct?

To find out your machines refresh rate go to Settings > Display adapter properties (its on the bottom) > Click on the Monitor tab. It will say either 60 or 120. The reason the box said optional is because not all versions of these models have the 120 refresh rate.

    @clam1952

I have tried what you wrote, both listing games in the Nvidia control panel, and tried putting the Nvidia graphic as automatically chosen by for any game app i run.
And that did unfortunately not work.
    @Helmut

As i can see on the MSI website, the newer laptops with the 10-series cards does not have a M behind them. Only the older cards like the 900 or lower has that.
Maybe the 10-series cards has it, but MSI just dont wanna add it, i dont know.

And for the screen i can`t really find any specific info, all i cant find on the website or any other sites is
    "

    • 17.3" Full HD (1920x1080), 120 Hz Refresh Rate and 5ms response time panel (Optional)
    • 17.3" Full HD (1920x1080) (Optional)"
    @indianacarnie

I went to Display adapter properties, and the monitor tab only showed 60Hz. So i guess i got the 60Hz screen.
BUT i alost noticed that my Intel HD graphic card is listed as the graphic card in the "Adapter" tab right next to the "monitor tab"
Should not that list the 1060?

And i have also done what you said about the Dragon Center app, and it did nothing for me *Sad

Thanks for all the reply's *Smile

Long shot but it's not something like it won't run if on battery power? I have heard of that being an issue in the past.

Are you using the latest driver? There were problems with the previous notebook driver.

Brand new laptop not performing as it should.

    Hi folks
    @MPN89
Many many times I see really high spec'd computers giving disappointing performance -- and usually it's due to really poor / old / sluggish HDD's.

If your new gaming laptop doesn't have a decent SSD in it for the OS it will run like thick molasses - even with an i7.

These days even the basic bog standard on board graphics while not good enough for gaming won't cause poor PC performance nor usually will lack of RAM -- any self respecting laptop has a MINIMUM of 8GB RAM these days.

I'd look at the I/O subsystem -- if not using SSD's you need spinners with the LARGEST POSSIBLE CACHE SIZE AND FASTEST POSSIBLE RPM (5400 one's are much too slow- 7200 RPM should be the minimum and there are a few laptop spinners around at 10,000 RPM but expensive - SSD will be cheaper but less capacity though).

It's amazing in all the topics I see on computer performance one very rarely hears of poor Disk I/O being responsible - but it's probably the biggest cause of disappointment and the easiest to fix.

Loads of people unnecessarily upgrade processors / RAM when a simple HDD upgrade would probably work better.

If you DO have an SSD in the computer try and download some sort of diagnostic tool and post the results on this forum. The rest of the PC sounds fine.

(When SSD's first came out -- a lot better now) people were amazed at how even old laptops with slow CPU's could perform so much better with an SSD to the old IDE HDD's in them !!).

    Cheers

Just found out a possible expensive fix.
If i connect a extra monitor it looks like it work as it should.
I tried to connect the TV with a HDMI cable, and then run CS, i got a stable fps ( tho it was capped at 60 cuse the TV can run higher) and it ran smoothly with no fluctuations in the fps, or the slow mouse cursor you get with vsync enabled.
So i gota see if i can borrow a monitor that can run more than 60fps, and see how that works.
And if it works, i guess i gota get a monitor to hook up to my laptop

Thanks again for all the replys!
