Windows 10: Brand new laptop with Windows 10 and notepad and excel not responding

I have a brand new HP laptop. Was working fine...now when I open Excel or try to print a PDF file it just says not responding. I have tried to type commands into the search bar to run commands and that won't allow me to type there. I know virtually nothing about computers and have no idea how to fix this. Any help? It is a brother printer and brand new WIndows Office.

Thank you for responding! Yes I can create files but cannot open a client file that I've exported from an online database. I can't send you the file as it is my client's data. Any ideas of what I can try? I've already restarted the laptop and reinstalled
Office. I literally just bought this laptop because my old one keeps crashing but I'm still able to use the old one (thankfully) WITH AN EXPIRED EXCEL SUBSCRIPTION EVEN... but not the expensive brand new one with a brand new paid subscription! What the heck.

 

How do I download a copy of Notepad?

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK
