Windows 10: Brief USB Connection Breakage after Windows Update from 1903 to 1909?

I recently applied some Windows Updates and Dell Updates for XPS 9570 laptop and my wireless trackpad is now operating strangely in that the Setpoint which controls the customized settings is disabling periodically and I have to disconnect and reconnect the UD3900 USB cable to the laptop to get it to work. I’m an IT SysAdmin Professional so usually pretty good at troubleshooting this kind of stuff but I’m at a loss at this point. I’ve also noticed at times some brief erratic behavior with the wireless keyboard that are indicative of the USB connection being briefly interrupted behaves like a stuck key for a second. Both bluetooth dongles are plugged into the UD3900. The Windows update was a major one updating from Windows 1903 to the 1909 version. It’s going to take many hours to try to isolate if it’s one of the Windows/Dell updates and which one so was hoping maybe some other users have run into this and can offer some suggestions?


I've of course sent a message to Pluggable support. Contacting Microsoft unfortunately in my experience the phone support process takes way too long as the tech support wants to me to repeat many steps I've already taken.


I'm looking for something more than the typical suggestions like "run SFC scannow" to check for file corruption. These are just shots in the dark. I thought maybe it was some sort of USB bus power throttling but it appears in Windows 1909 they removed the USB power saving setting in the Advanced Power Management options. The problem is very sporadic. It can not happen for a few hours and then happen every 2 minutes for a period of time. The only thing I've seen is in Task Manager I noticed the "Windows Driver Framework" process seems to be taking up a little more CPU than usual but still under 15%.


At this point it seems the only solution is to system restore to before the Dell updates to isolate if it was a Dell update and not a Windows update. If the problem persists, then I'm screwed. No way I'm going to reinstall Windows. I'd rather try a new docking station for better compatibility than waste another day. If someone who's run into this has a potential solution, that would be a lifesaver.

I would suggest you to Update USB Controllers.

To update the USB Controllers from Device Manager follow these steps.

• Press Windows key + X key.
• Select Device manager and a Device Manager window will pop-up.
• Double Click on USB Controllers to expand.
• Right click on the USB Controllers that is listed and select Update.

USB issue with win10 1903 update

1. What is the exact issue that you are facing with the USB drive?
2. What do you mean when you say "sub-directory link" and "if its saved on a USB drive"?
3. Is the USB drive letter changing itself after the 1903 update?

Installing windows off of a USB stick

Step By Step from vista:
From admin cmd prompt

1. diskpart
1a. list disk
2. select disk 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
3. clean
4. create partition primary
5. select partition 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
6. active
7. format fs=fat32
8. assign
9. exit

Copy Windows Vista's DVD ROM content to the Flash Drive

xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\ (d being your vista cd and e being your usb stick)

And that's it, boot off your usb disk
