Windows 10: Broadcom wifi adapter issues

For many weeks now I have been experiencing issues with the wifi connection to my HP Pavilion laptop. For no apparent reason the wifi adapter stops working and on running the troubleshooter I get the error message "Broadcom BCM43142 802.11 bgn wi-fi Adapter adapter is experiencing driver or hardware problems". I have tried fixing this - with frequent references to this site - but the problem refuses to go away. Checking the driver properties in Device Manager I am told that "This device cannot start. (Code 10) - {Operation Failed} - The requested operation was unsuccessful." The Problem Code from the Details tab of the driver properties is 00000000




My laptop OS is Windows 10, 64 bit, version 1803, and this is updated to include cumulative update KB4462933.



The adapter driver is version 7.35.352.0, dated 22/11/16. An update dated failed to install on 29th September 2018, error code 0x8024ce0a, however when I try to update the driver from Device Manager I am told that the latest driver is already installed.

It's very unlikely to - Broadcom 440x is not a wireless adaptor!

Someone changed the title of the thread to say it was a wireless adaptor, but I think this is incorrect as the Broadcom 440x is the driver for a wired ethernet adaptor, not WiFi.

The confusion may have been caused because when it was failing, the Broadcom issue also breaks the WiFi networking at the same time, but the actual wireless adaptor isn't the Broadcom 440x in this scenario.

Also, is this the first time you are using the said adapter to connect to the network? If no, and the adapter was working fine on Windows before, you can
rollback the driver by following these steps.

• Go to Start, then click Settings.
• Choose Devices, then scroll down and click on Device
  Manager.
• Expand Network adapters, right click on your driver and click
  Properties.
• Go to the Driver tab, then check if there's an option for you to either
  Update or Rollback the driver. If Rollback is available, please choose that first. Check if the issue still persists.
