Windows 10: Broke all my app and shortcut icons

I had 3 rows of shortcuts on my Desktop win10 and didn't like the clutter to I made a new folder on desktop and placed the 3 rows of shortcuts in there. Immediately all the icons went blank white and even placing them back on desktop doesn't fix it. I tried right clicking each shortcut > properties > change icon but it only fixed 30% of them. Even though it shows the original icon graphic in "Change Icon" it does nothing when I apply. Tried restarting PC multiple times, deleting icon cache

Another weird thing is at the same time, when I'd send something from the Desktop to recycle bin the item on desktop would still show there until I right click + pressed Refresh. That's never happened before until today. It somehow fixed itself but still worth mentioning.


Also, it's not just the shortcut icons that are broken. For example, the shortcut to GeForce Experience runs the software when I double click it, and if I right click the shortcut to "open file location" the Icon in that location is also broken.

The only other thing I did besides move my shortcuts from Desktop into a new folder on Desktop was install Winrar. It was right after these 2 actions everything got messed. Uninstalling Winrar also didn't fix


Thinking about factory resetting this Laptop to start fresh been a year but I don't know the current 2021 best method of starting Windows 10 from scratch on a laptop that has 500gb SSD + 1TB HDD. Every computer I've owned in the past had a single storage drive

No outlook.com app shortcut icon in chrome

Uninstalling chrome make's the chrome Outlook.com app https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/hotmail checker i use, disappear from chrome as a shortcut next to the star button for bookmarks and the settings button where i have adblock and google chromecast icon

How do i get it back, i use windows 8.1 64 bit, extremly annoying that i can't get this icon,button back in chrome, please help me *Smile

 

Desktop Shortcut Icons

The desktop shortcut created for a specific website should bear the website's actual logo. With what you've experienced, there could be something wrong with how the shortcut was created.

If you've created the shortcut by selecting Create shortcut, then we suggest that you try the other way, that is by dragging the website icon that appears in the address bar to your desktop. Follow these steps:

• Using Internet Explorer, access a website.
• Once the website opens, you will see its icon in the address bar.
• Click and drag the icon on your desktop.

The website shortcut bearing its actual logo should now be saved on your desktop.

Blank shortcut icon GPU-Z

I know I am quite late but as I was scrolling through I saw this post which happened to one of friend too. This sometimes happens with Windows. Usually a reboot will solve the problem. However if this doesn't, try setting the icon for the shortcut(right-click pinned icon, right-click program, left-click properties, select "change icon...") or refreshing it by switching to a different icon, applying it, and then reverting back to the original icon. Remove the shortcut from the taskbar and replace it with the start menu shortcut or simply drag the .exe file to the taskbar.
