Windows 10: Brother MFC-8860DN Driver for Win11

Some have asked how to operate a Brother MFC-8860DN printer with a PC using Win11 when Brother does not supply a Win11 driver, and Win11 will not recognize Brother's last available driver, for Win10. I have found that Brother's operating suite for the MFC-8860DN, Control Center 3, available as a download from Brother for the Win7-64 OS, will allow the MFC-8860DN to receive both print and scan commands in Win11, when the MFC-8860DN is connected via a LAN. Win10 PCs can also communicate with the printer in CC3 over the same LAN. Hope this helps somebody.

Brother MFC 8860DN Drivers Installed to "other" in Device Manager

The drivers for my brother MFC 8860DN are supposed to be included in Windows 10, according to the Brother website. But the printer shows up as an "unspecified device" in the Devices and Printers screen, and as "other" in Device Manager. The troubleshoot
option is not available in Devices and Printers, and checking for updates in Device Manager just continues looping. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling both the device and the drivers, but I keep getting the same issues.

I am connected to printer via USB.

 

Brother MFC J6720DW listed with strange icon in Devices and Printers

I have reinstalled the drivers for my Brother MFC J6720DW and now the printer icon is listed in the unspecified category instead of the printer category. The printer is the "Device" icon to the right.





Right clicking on the icon shows the usual items for a printer (printing properties etc.), In addition it shows a "Browse Files" entry that lists the card reader of the printer.





To the left of the Brother printer icon there is another similar one that seems to be my USB card reader

PROBLEM: Bought refurbish 2019 Dell Precision 7740 laptop with Windows 10 Pro and Norton 360 Deluxe (all updated and working), but cannot add my old 2007 Brother MFC-8860DN printer/scanner/fax...even though my old Dell Precision m4600 laptop with the same OS and AV can still connect and work as expected over the same USB cable.



DETAILS: On the m4600, Printers and Scanners shows the "Brother MFC-8860DN USB" when either the a new or an old USB cable is connected; works fine.



On the P7740, Printers and Scanners shows "USB Composite Device Driver is Unavailable" when the SAME new or old USB cable is connected to any of the three USB ports (all USB 3.1 Gen 1 with Powershare) OR to either of the other USB ports (both Thunderbolt 3 Type-C). Type C to type A adapter used where necessary, with same results.



Brother.com says Windows built-in generic USB print driver should work (as it does on the m4600, but not on the P7740).



No amount of running the "Add a printer or scanner" or "running the printer troubleshooter" on the P7740 resolves the issue.



I believe this a MS Windows OS problem, not a hardware issue, as the USB ports can be used with old external USB storage devices. But how to fix it? I cannot uninstall/reinstall an OS built-in driver and Brother says that one should work. Help!
