Windows 10: Brown Boxes in Image Icons, Thumbnail pics disappearing, Won't let me cycle through my...

I have Dropbox. They are set up for "local" use, not "online only". I've never had any issues. and I don't think any of these issues has anything to do with Dropbox. I don't use onedrive at all either. I recently got windows 11 and now some of my jpg icons are generic mountains instead of the image. I went into the options and selected the show thumbnails not icons option. SOME of them started showing the mini image. I have images that have this little brown box in the bottom left corner. Most all of those won't show the thumbnail. Also, when I open pictures and click the arrow to the right,

Picture ICONS instead of thumbnail pics

Suddenly all of my picture thumbnails are ICONS, instead of thumbnail pics. I have gone through the steps of Unchecking a box that says "always show ICONS instead of thumbnails" and that did NOT help.

I don't like Microsoft Edge or the Cloud, I think those are the culprits that keep doing this to my thumbnails.

I would request you to check if the option is enabled. Please follow the steps mentioned below:

1. Open File explorer and then click on
   View.
   
2. Then click on Options and go to
   View tab.
   
3. Then check if the options Always show icons, never thumbnails is
   unchecked.
   

Also check the visual effect settings.

1. Open System properties (Windows key +
   Pause/Break key). You can also open it Control panel >
   Security and Settings > System.
   
2. Then click on Advance system settings.
   
3. Then go to Advanced tab and click on
   Settings under performance.
   
4. Check the box behind “Show thumbnails instead of icons”.
   

If the options are enabled, then you can try to rebuild icon cache.

1. Open Command prompt as Administrator.
   
2. Copy and paste the following:
   

ie4uinit.exe -ClearIconCache

taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F

DEL "%localappdata%\IconCache.db" /A

shutdown /r /f /t 00

4. This will restart your computer and the icons should reappear.



Also try to change the view to large icons if it’s displaying as small icons. .

Image Thumbnails

When I open a folder my image thumbnails appear briefly and then systematically disappear within a few seconds, leaving only a blank picture and the image details. If I back out and re-open the folder they appear again and then are gone again. I have
ensured that the box stating "always show icons, never thumbnails" is unchecked in the settings. This problem just started and I have not knowingly changed any settings or done any updates recently. Thanks in advance.
