BSOD after installing KB4497165 (intel microcode) 20H2 build 19042.685

    Hello guys,

After installing the update "KB4497165" (intel-microcode update) my system started to crash randomly. I opted to uninstall it and it worked fine. by that time, I was on W10 2004 but I guess when I updated to 20H2 build 19042.685 that "KB4497165" was included and the issue started again.

I opted to turn off intelppm.sys in the registry entry and that reduced the total numbers of BSOD, but the issue still persists.

My system is an Intel XEON x5460 3.16ghz @ 3.96ghz with 6GB of DDR2 ram on an ASUS p5q Deluxe. It might seem that the issue is because it is overclocked, but as I said, immediately after uninstalling that update, everything went ok again. I tested all ram stick one by one with memtest 3 passes and none of them were showing any problems.

My question is (Besides if you guys know the solution), how an update that in theory does not alter that CPU (it is not listed in the update) could cause that issue? I hope that I have not to downgrade to W10 1909 or 2004.

anyway, before disabling intelppm.sys this is what whocrashed reported back

    crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\120620-15484-01.dmp

Bug check description: This indicates that a kernel-mode driver attempted to access pageable memory at a process IRQL that was too high.

    after disabling it

This was probably caused by the following module: ntoskrnl.exe (nt+0x3F5780)

    What do you think guys?

Thanks in advance for your help.
