    BSOD after updates

    Split from this thread.

I have similar problems. Numerous windows 10 updates cause a BSOD. The update starts by restarting and then I get a BSOD. The gist of the error is that there is no boot record or something similar. What happens is that the Update changes my BIOS boot order where the Windows Boot Manager is missing, thus getting the BSOD. I am forced to shut down the computer via hard boot, otherwise if I just enter the BIOS, the Windows Boot Manager is totally missing. Once entered after the hard boot, I have to navigate to the Boot Order where the option for "Windows Boot Manager" shows up out of order, I have to reselect the order making sure it it 1st in line of 3 items. Others are the SSD and then the DVD. ASUS motherboard, X299 Chipset, 32GB Ram, fairly high end system. The last 2 updates have taken hours and hours to install. There is plenty of space on the SSD drive, internet bandwidth is 100MB and extremely few users. This forced update business is maddening. This is the 2nd time I've had to miss hours and hours of work, and loss of income due to this. Today's update only indicated dot net framework 3.5 and 4.0 updates, which should NOT take hours and hours, its been running over 6 hours now. I am extremely angry with this forced update situation. Never had these type of issues with Windows 7, a much more stable platform. If this is what Microsoft calls progress and a good thing, I'd like to know what the opposite is like.

    :)

    BSOD- atikmpag.sys

This is most likely due to an installation/upgrade error with ATI driver's. I suggest doing DriveSweeper and the following:
    • Drivesweeper all drivers & in Safe Mode
    • Unistall all drivers that aren't used in DriveSweeper (CCC Profiler Updates, MSI AfterBurner, anything related to ATI that use's it's drivers.)
    • After you do this, the first thing you need to do is go into Device Manager and Unistall your ATI Drivers

Once your done, restart the PC and then try installing the latest drivers.

I had several issues with this in the past, but I overcame it with logical reasoning and whenever I have a driver issue, I just use these steps and I always overcome the problem.

    Best of luck! *Toast :toast:

Windows Updated(16299.309).KB4088776 Restart is required to complete.

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

Thanks for the suggestions and for the time to respond BSOD after updates :) Best regards.

And thanks for the tip of that program, I'll have it on my list.

    BSOD after updates

    Random BSOD while browsing internet

BitDefender is nothing special. mwac.sys causes BSODs anywhere.
A tiny documentation can be found here: Solved Random BSODs - Windows 10 Forums
In that very thread, the suggested action apparently worked.

The storage and network filters of any third party antivirus can cause BSODs. Neither MBAM nor BitDefender is any special. For a regular antivirus, it may be shifted to an alternative; but MBAM has no alternative. So a clean install of the said program is the most feasible first step.
As far as the first step is not failing, it is better to not think for the second step. Because the BSODs are not universal, failure at the first step is not universal; and success at the second step is also not universal.
That is why I posted that my suggestion may work, or may not. Let us see where it goes.
