BSOD and crashes after booting up (atikmpag.sys & MEMORY_MANAGEMENT)

Computer will just freeze, BSOD, or monitors go into standby. I then have to hold the power button and reboot, which sometimes it will get better after a few times.
Used to be rare problem, now is very consistent (every day, most commonly soon after it boots up).

If it goes okay for the first 30 minutes, it usually doesn't crash at all for the night, and I can resume doing stuff like play video games.

Here are my BSOD logs and Reliability Monitor screenshot

Note: I've been using a 500W PSU to power my 550W R9 280 for a year now, but not sure which component is at fault.

    ---
    I am on Windows 10, 12gb RAM, i5-2500, R9 280, PSU 500W.

    1) What usually happens is one of the following:
    * BSOD: usually either error with atikmpag.sys, or MEMORY_MANAGEMENT
    * Everything will just freeze. Audio will go on for a bit, but everything is stuck for a few minutes before it reboots itself.
    * Monitors just go into standby mode. Computer will still be powered and whirring, but is frozen.

    2) Then it will either:
    * Power on again. Monitors will stay black, doesn't show BIOS, it will whir for a bit but then power off itself again. Repeat cycle a few times.
    * Power on, show BIOS, but then power off itself.

The freeze will usually happen on certain occasions like:
    - Just did something graphics related (change netflix episode, start an Overwatch game)
    - Sometimes if I've left the computer for a bit right after I boot, the moment I move my mouse it will crash

    What I've tried:
    - I've changed RAM
    - I've uninstalled and reinstalled ATI drivers (made the problem occur less but still happens)

Thanks heaps, would appreciate any help or an upvote.

    :)

  2. Everything crashes after Fall Creators Update

After installing the new update, everything started crashing. Apps, browser tabs, and Windows is throwing BSOD's.

    Latest BSOD's error was MEMORY_MANAGEMENT.

    I have tried:

    • Resetting Windows
    • Tried the "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" command
    • Tried the "sfc /scannow" command
After enabling Driver Verifier, I was able to boot up Windows and play around for a while, but at some point I got a BSOD with error SPECIAL_POOL_DETECTED_MEMORY_CORRUPTION. Not sure if it's related.

BSOD and crashes after booting up (atikmpag.sys & MEMORY_MANAGEMENT)

    Hi piftsy,

I'm very sorry for the huge delay, I'm currently very busy with studies and exams.

Do you still need help? If you do please upload a new zip in your next reply.

Not a problem thanks for replying, I appreciate it.

I have attached the new zip, as well as GPU-z logs (I set it to write to log right up to a crash).

Currently, the most common crash is monitors go into standby mode, streamed audio for a movie continues for a few minutes, but computer is frozen (I can't pause or sticky keys noise).

Thanks again, please don't hesitate to prioritise study over this issue!

Troubleshooting a counterfeit installation is useless as it is not known what has been modified to your system.
A counterfeit installation contains heavily modified code which causes the system to behave in unexpected ways.
For this reason, analyzing counterfeit systems is unreliable and analysts won't try it.
I recommend to install a genuine copy of Windows.
If, after you have installed a genuine copy of Windows, you still get BSOD's we'll be happy to assist you.

BSOD and crashes after booting up (atikmpag.sys & MEMORY_MANAGEMENT)

Thanks for the reply, I completely understand and will look into it. Can I ask how I should go abouts getting a genuine one (I bought this computer second-hand)? I am looking around the settings and can't see where I could enter a license, or 'deactivate'.

    Thanks again.

To enter a new key, Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Change product key.

You better do this after a clean install, reason mentioned in previous post.

Hi again hope you are well. I've been able to contact the seller and figured everything out. The windows was being kept activated by software. I've since removed, de-registered, and got a legitimate copy from my university.

If you're still able to help I've attached updated logs. I have not had the time to fresh install but if there's no other option I can do it!
I haven't had a proper BSOD in a while but system has crashed/frozen many times.

    Thanks again.

The next step would be to upgrade, because for us to properly troubleshoot your system needs to be up to date.

Okay I think this time it's legit! BSOD's once a few days ago and crashed today, hope there's stuff to find.

Thanks again for your help, if this is still wrong I promise to not bother you anymore *Smile

BSOD and crashes after booting up (atikmpag.sys & MEMORY_MANAGEMENT)

I would need the memory dump, C:\Windows\Memory.dmp, or you need to wait for another BSOD as the minidump in the zip is corrupted.

If you upload the memory dump, upload it to a 3rd party uploader like onedrive, dropbox, or google drive and post a share link in your next reply. Directly uploading isn't possible due to the size.

I've attached another zip which has a new minidump but it's still quite small. I got another but new BSOD (SQ something); though the normal freezes still happen normally.

I can't seem to find the full memory dump- I read something about pagefile.sys and setting that to be more than my RAM, is that something I should do now?

It seems there are traces present on your system from the crack, for this reason I would recommend to perform a clean installation (after important/personal files have been backed up)
