  1. BSOD Driver power state failure

    Hi,
Thanks in Advance *Smile. Recently, I started experiencing frequent crashes of my wifi as in my wifi network goes off and there would not be any visible networks . The problem gets fixed by trouble shooting or sometimes i have to disable and reenable my wireless driver Also, I started getting BSOD for "DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE" and I assumed it was a power settings issue and changed to maximum performance. Today I got another BSOD for the same issue. My guess is that it has to do something with my wireless drivers.
Any help or suggestions would be welcome. Thanks!!

    :)

BSOD - Driver Power State Failure

    Hi Auggy,

I updated both of the offending drivers and so far I have had 2 days BSOD free. The original problem was not consistently repeatable, so I cannot say with certainty that the "problem is solved," but early indications are positive.

    Thanks for the guidance.

    BSOD Driver power state failure

    Hi vamsinaruto,

    Welcome to Ten Forums.

There were 9 bsod mini dump files debugged and 2 misbehaving drivers identified.
There were multiple windows update failures.

    1) open administrative command prompt and type and paste these commands:
    2) sfc /scannow
    3) dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth
    4) dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
    5) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    6) chkdsk /scan
    7) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    8) perform windows updates and post any failed kb# with error code

    9) The best way to fix the misbehaving Nvidia driver is to uninstall everything Nvidia using Display driver uninstaller and install new drivers from the computer manufacturer's website or from the Nvidia website.

The computer manufacturer's web site is preferred.
Enter the computer's serial or product number and the operating system to view available drivers.

If you use the Nvidia web site be sure the "clean install" box is checked and only install the graphics driver and the physx driver.

Official Display Driver Uninstaller DDU Download
Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 17.0.7.2

Display Driver Uninstaller: How to use - Windows 7 Help Forums

    NVIDIA

    10) Open the Asus website > enter the computer's serial or product number and operating system > view all drivers and identify the Intel Wireless Wifi Link Driver.
The driver can be download easier if you have a wired or ethernet cat5e connection.
This would allow you to disconnect wireless with using a hardware off button if available and directly download and install the driver after it is uninstalled.
If you don't have a wired ethernet available then proceed to steps 11 -13.
    11) Download the Intel wireless wifi link driver to the desktop.
    12) Open device manager > expand network adapters > identify intel wireless wifi link driver > uninstall the driver
    13) install the driver previously downloaded to the desktop.

    14) Perform Memtest86+ to evaluate the RAM and Motherboard.
Run memtest86+ version 5.01 for at least 8 runs.
This may take many hours so plan to run it overnight.
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
When Memtest86+ has completed 8 or more runs use a camera or smart phone camera to take a picture and post an image into the thread.
    The computer has 16GB RAM.
It will take approximately 1 - 2 hrs / GB RAM
Only 1 error is a failure.
If there is a failure you can abort testing and then test 1 RAM at a time in the same DIMM.
Each RAM then needs to be tested for a minimum of 8 passes.
Testing less than 8 passes has too high an incidence of false negatives.
A false negative is a pass when the RAM is malfunctioning.
Please make sure that there are at least 8 passes and the more the better.

    Hello @vamsinaruto

There are only two BSOD which occurred in the last 6 months so we only need to concern ourselves with these and can ignore the older ones.

These two recent ones are both 9F Driver Power State Failures and as @zbook points out they are due to the network driver misbehaving.

    Netwbw02.sys dated: Sun Oct 9 17:00:54 2016

Please look for an updated driver from Intel.

This will be trial and error to find the most stable driver.
This is the driver that you currently have on the system that has produced the bsod:
Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\netwbw02.sys (18.33.5.1, 3.35 MB (3,517,200 bytes), 5/3/2016 11:17 PM)This is the driver that Asus is currently displaying on the web site for your computers configuration and operating system:
    version v18.12.0.3 2015/09/01

The appears to be an older driver.
So that will be a roll back.

Windows by default will update non-Microsoft drivers.
This feature can be turned off.
At this time please download the driver offered by Asus.
At a later time if this driver produces a bsod you will need to see whether it is the same driver or an updated driver that produced the bsod. Based on that you then would have 2 options: option 1 is to turn off windows updates of non-Microsoft drivers or download an alternative version from the Intel website. Computer manufacturer drivers are almost always preferred as they are typically more rigorously tested for the configuration and may have been improved over component manufacturer drivers. It is important to not use driver update websites as there can be potentially unwanted modifications or unsuspecting software in the downloads.

  12. Hello @zbook
I tried to do a memtest but even after following the instrutions I couldn't boot my USB for a RAM test. I have used 3 different USB but I still couldn't boot into my USB even after setting it as my first priority in BIOS. I have done a similar RAM test for 8 passes around 1 year back and I didn't get any errors. I am not sure where I have gone wrong. Is there another way to do a memtest using USB?

For Asus laptop you should be able to click the escape or F8 keys to boot to the bios menu where you can click USB drive without changing the bios boot order.
Please try this method and report the results into the thread.

  14. Hello @zbook
Thanks for the advice. I used the "ESC" key to go into the boot menu and have selected the uefi generic flash disk as the boot device but my laptop still started with the OS.
