  1. BSOD followed by PC stating to select proper boot drive.

Hello, I’ve been having this issue where my PC has been crashing. I will get the BSOD and get the stop code: CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED. After a few seconds it will then go to a black screen with the message “Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media on selected boot device and press a key”. At this point I have to manually turn the pc off with the power button and then when I turn it back on it boots up like nothing ever happened. So far I have checked the drive health and it seems to be healthy. Checked for corrupted files using advice from this post: https://answers.microsoft.com

    :)

  3. "Reboot and Select Proper Boot device"

    Hi,

Please answer the below question to assist you better.

What happens when you select the hard disk as the priority and then try booting from the BIOS screen?

I suggest you to try performing a Startup repair to check if it helps.

Perform a Startup Repair on the system

Create a Windows 10 installation media and perform a Startup Repair on the device and check if it helps to resolve the issue.
This is an alternate way to boot the device and run recovery tools when something goes wrong with the Operating system.

Please follow the steps below to do Startup repair:

    Steps:-

    • Insert the installation USB drive and boot Windows 10 from it.

If you don't have one, you can Create an installation Media.
    • In the ‘Windows setup’ page select the ‘language to install’, ‘Time and currency format’
and the ‘keyboard or input method’ and click on ‘next’.\
    • Click on ‘Repair your computer’ and select ‘Troubleshoot’.
    • Click on ‘Advanced options’ and select ‘Startup Repair’
      and select the operating system.

Hope this information is helpful. Please do let us know if you need further assistance, we’ll be glad to assist you.

BSOD followed by PC stating to select proper boot drive.

'Reboot and select proper Boot device' problem?

    Hi Alex,

If you have and if you are still getting this error message, I would suggest you to go to BIOS and set the right boot order.

I suggest you to download the Windows 10 ISO and create a Media Creation tool from different computer on to the USB and then perform Automatic Repair.

    Refer to the following link:

    Download Windows 10

(Refer to the section "Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool " in the above article
    for creating the tool).

Once you have the installation media, follow the steps:

    • Start your computer from the installation media. Insert the disk or USB stick and restart your computer. If you see a message asking you to “Press any key to boot from DVD,” do so. If you don’t see the message, you might need to
change the boot order in your computer's BIOS settings so that it first starts from the disk or USB. When you see the 'Install Windows' page, tap or click 'Repair your computer' link to start the Windows Recovery Environment.
    • In the Windows Recovery Environment, on the Choose an option screen, click 'Troubleshoot'.
    • Click, Advanced Options and then click on 'Automatic Repair'.
    • After this complete the repair and see if you are able to boot in to your computer.

If the issue still persists, I would suggest you to try boot rec commands from winRE

To run Startup Repair from the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), follow these steps:

    1. Insert the Windows installation disc into the disc drive, and then start the computer.

    2. Press a key when the message Press any key to boot from CD or DVD appears.

If your PC does not detect the media automatically

    • During the restart process, read the screen for any instructions that explain how to interrupt normal startup and enter the basic input/output system (BIOS) setup utility. Most PCs use the F2, F10, ESC, or DEL key to begin the
      BIOS Setup.
    • Look for a tab in the BIOS Setup Utility that is labeled
      Boot Order, Boot Options, or
Boot. Following the directions on the screen, use the arrow keys to go to the
      Boot Order, then press Enter.
    • Locate the CD, DVD, or USB flash drive (this might be called Removable Device) in the Boot list. Following the directions on the screen, use the arrow keys to move the drive up so that it appears first in the Boot list. Press Enter.
The boot order sequence is now changed to boot from the CD, DVD, or USB flash drive.
    • Press F10 to save your changes and to exit the BIOS Setup Utility. Select
Yes in the confirmation window. The PC will restart.
    3. Select a language, a time and a currency, a keyboard or input method, and then click
    Next.

    4. Click Repair your computer.

    5. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, select the drive of your Windows installation, and then click
    Next.

    6. At the System Recovery Options dialog box, click
    Repair your computer.

    7. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click
    Next.

    8. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click
    Startup Repair.

Hope this information was helpful and do let us know if you need further assistance. We will be glad to assist.
