  1. [BSOD] Kernel Security Check Failure | USBXHCI.SYS and ntoskrnl.exe

Hey everyone! In short, I'm having a BSOD that will only happen on it's own every couple weeks, but I have found a way to coerce it out on demand as well.

To get it to happen on purpose, all I have to do is open a video file on my PC (appears to be any kind) and jump around to different points in the video somewhat rapidly. Over time, the rendering becomes slower and laggy and sometimes the audio can't keep up with the video (although the video has some trouble too). This is particularly noticeable when using Adobe Premiere pro while editing and jumping to different points of playback throughout (but also occurs in VLC media player or Windows 10 Movies and TV)

Based on the research I've already done, I'm guessing it has to do with my DAC (FiiO e10k).

I ran a minidump file a while back on http://www.osronline.com/page.cfm?name=Analyze and see mention in the "Primary analysis" that it is a WIN8_DRIVER_FAULT (I am on Windows 10 btw, but I believe this is just a legacy thing)

I later ran my latest 4 dumps through NirSoft BlueScreenView, which notes the same two objects (USBXHCI.SYS and ntoskrnl.exe)

USBXHCI.SYS should be for USB 3 bus, so I tried moving my DAC ( FiiO e10k ) over to USB 2 and the problem still happens. If its on USB 2 could it still be the culprit?

The reason I suspect it is:

    1. The video lag with audio sync cutout thing before the BSOD
    2. Once in a while my sound will just die and It'll be a "device has malfunctioned" type error without a BSOD

The thing that throws me off is that it's not on the USB 3 bus, its in a USB 2 port.

Its also my only means of sound given my current configuration so I have tried without it for short periods, but I don't really have a way to use my PC for extended periods weeks etc without some kind of off-board DAC. I want to get another one soon to both upgrade and confirm whether or not it was the issue, but I'm somewhat strapped for cash at the time being.

Thank you any and all who have anything to add!
