  1. BSOD on startup after changing maximum ram on msconfig

Recently, after changing my maximum ram on msconfig in attempt to make my computer use the entirety of my installed ram, I've been stuck in a loop of blue screens and restarts. I've tried all the advanced options for restarts and safe mode as well as the windows recovery environment to no avail. I even searched my issue up online and found people with a similar issue, but when entering commands into command prompt like "bcdedit /deletevalue [{current} or {default}] truncatememory" I get returned "An error occurred while attempting to delete the specified data element, Element not found." I can

Windows shows 8GB RAM installed but 4GB RAM is usable

    Hi There,

I've just upgraded my pc from 4GB RAM to 8GB RAM. Windows seems to have detected this upgrade but why does it show as only 4GB RAM available. The following is what I have tried so far with no luck:

    • I have tried the msconfig method on ensuring maximum memory is not checked.
    • physically removed the new RAM and reinstalled it
Any thoughts/suggestions on how i can resolve this matter?

    Thanks

  3. cannot return to normal startup in MSCONFIG after running it in diagnostic startup.

    Hi Gary,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand you are not able to boot to in normal mode. Sorry for the inconvenience this has caused.

Did you follow the below steps to enable the Normal startup?

    • Press Windows + R keys from the Keyboard.
    • Type msconfig and hit Enter.
    • Click on the General tab.
    • Select the Normal startup option.
    • Click on Apply and Ok.
    • Restart the system and check.
If yes, you may follow the below steps to check if the computer boots to selective startup:

    • Press Windows + R keys from the Keyboard.
    • Type msconfig and hit Enter.
    • Select the General tab.
    • Select the Selective startup option, check the box for load startup services, load startup items, use original boot configuration will be enabled.
    • Restart the computer.
If it boots successfully to selective startup then you can boot to normal startup from selective startup.

Please check the above scenario and get back with the results.

    Thank you.

    Changing RAM Settings

    Hi a,

My name is Riccardo and I'd be happy to assist.

Generally when you install more RAM the Operating System just takes that additional RAM and adds it to its physical memory allowance. If you are not seeing the additional RAM there are a few troubleshooting steps we can perform.

Step 1 - Is it showing up in the BIOS?

Can you go into the BIOS settings of your computer and check if it shows 16GB vs the 8GB you had before?

Step 2 - Is there a software limit that is causing the extra RAM not to be seen?

Click Start > type in msconfig

    Press Enter

    Click on the Boot Tab

Go to your Windows 10 Install (loaded on the C:\ Drive)

    Click Advanced Options

Is there a maximum memory lock?

    If so, unclick Maximum Memory...

Step 3 - Is Windows 10 actually reading 16GB of physical memory?

Go to Start > type in System

    Click System Information

Under Installed Physical Memory is it showing 16GB?

Let me know if the above helps you, if not I will be here to assist with further troubleshooting steps.
