Windows 10: BSOD "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA"

Windows 10, BSOD - ntoskrnl.exe problem

Just had the BSOD error "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA"

I was trying to play the game Firewatch at the time, launched into a save state. Almost immediately froze and then the BSOD appeared.

Any suggestions?

 

Windows 1511 will not update to 1607: BSOD PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA

Andre Da Costa recommended these steps:

• Disable (preferrably uninstall) your Antivirus utility before attempting the upgrade.
• Disable General USB Devices (example - Smart Card Reader).
• Do a clean boot and try again.
• If you are upgrading using the .ISO file, disconnect from the Internet during setup, if you are connected by LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi, disable both and attempt setup again.
• If you are updating through Windows Update, when the download reaches 100% disconnect from the Internet LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi and proceed with the installation.
• If that does not work, try using the .ISO file to upgrade if possible. (not available with this build)
• If you are connected to a domain, switch to a local account
• If you have any external devices attached to the machine, disconnect them (example, USB keys, external hard disk, printers, non-essential devices).

I had previously uninstalled (completely) my Norton Internet Security software.

I disabled every USB device that Windows allowed me to disable.

I unplugged every USB device from my computer, except my keyboard and mouse (obviously).

I tried again using Windows Update, then unplugged my ethernet cable (and I do not have wireless) from the cable modem.

Update failed with a BSOD at... guess where... 91%. PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA (I'm shocked).

Tried again, this time with Media Creation Tool and a USB Drive.

Failed again. BSOD. Same place, same error.

Help?

The ‘PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA’ stop message usually occurs after the installation of faulty hardware or in the event of failure of installed hardware. The system generates a fault, which normally indicates that the system
looks for data in the paging file. In this circumstance, however, the missing data is identified as being located within an area of memory that cannot be paged out to disk. The system faults, but cannot find, the data and is unable to recover. Faulty hardware,
a buggy system service, antivirus software, and a corrupted NTFS volume can all generate this type of error.

The ‘win32kbase.sys’ is an essential element of the registry system since its function is to manage the proper cooperation of the hardware and the drivers of your device.

• Could you upload the latest dump file to know the root cause of the issue?
  

Meanwhile, I suggest you to follow the methods listed below to see if it works:

Method 1

Run SFC tool:

• Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the following command:
  
  sfc /scannow
  

Method 2

Use DISM tool:

You may repair potentially corrupted system image using DISM tool. It is used to update the files and correct the problem, if a Windows image becomes unserviceable.

• Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the following commands sequentially and one by one:
  
  DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
  
  DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
  
  DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  

You may also try the steps listed in Troubleshoot blue screen errors
and check if it works.

For better understanding of the error, you may want to go through

Note:

While performing chkdsk on the hard drive, if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive then
chkdsk tries to repair that sector. Any data available on that might be lost.
