  2. Can anything go wrong if I uninstall my display adapter in safe mode?

In your opinion, should this fix the video_tdr_failure (atikmpag.sys) problem?

    Hi Aabhi021290,

    Welcome to the 10forums *Smile

Do I read it correctly that the Windows Boot Manager has an option called 'Windows .... Diagnostics'?
    Could you run it?

  5. It is actually Memory Diagnostics , result no error.
I contacted a shop which after their diagnostics, told me mobo problem. They asked me $95 for replacement and 1 year warrenty.

The questions that occur to me
    1. Is it really the mobo or do they just want to get this done quickly and get paid?
    2. If it really is the mobo, is it the same model?
    3. Is the place a trustworthy place, even though you may know the place many often don't know what really is going on.

A problem that may occur with mobo replacement is activation, because a new mobo is a new system according to Microsoft.
A shop normally installs a counterfeit system to be cheap and as a mobo replacement will remove the pre-activation you may have a problem.
You could also take care of installation media before replacing the mobo, note the key on the COA sticker on the back of the laptop or behind the battery (just in case), call Microsoft and explain to them what happened. They'll normally activate the system again.

If any activation problem occurs, the best would be to go here

  7. Thank you for you time.
1: Is there a way to know what part is giving problem. I mean I connected external monitor and horizontal line showed up on external monitor also. So i thought screen is OK and some internal hardware fault occured.

2:I think they will provide same mobo. What will happen if they put other mobo in my laptop. I mean they will connect all other things to mobo and provide me laptop after they done testing right ? Will it going to blast or something. Will new replacement damage my graphic card , ram also. I really dont know these hardware stuffs.Enlighten me .

3: In past ,Two of my friends got their laptops, repaired from this shop. Their laptops are working fine. Shop is also huge. It also has separate workshop where many workers were repairing various laptops.

My laptop came with windows 7 home premium. Recently I updated it to windows 10 ( when microsoft was providing free update). I think now it is digitally activated or something. Now if my mobo get replaced , microsoft will think that I got new laptop so it will deactivate windows 10. How can I prove to microsoft that this laptop is the same one?

    BSOD VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE atikmpag.sys // and // Horizontal lines

    1. The description would give me suggestions of a possible GPU that is causing problems. A mobo is rarely the real cause.

    2. The mobo of a laptop has a specific design, a different mobo won't fit because the design is different. When a design is different you can't put everything together without problems because of the design of the laptop is built for that specific mobo model.
However, when trying too hard to put everything together some things could get damaged.

    3. Pre-installed Windows 7 laptops use the kind of activation that needs the BIOS for activation, they can be called 'hardware activation' because you simply don't need to put in a key when reinstalling. The problem is that when replacing the mobo the activation stuff in the BIOS will be gone, a shop cannot put it in because the manufacturer of the laptop flashes it in the BIOS.

A digital entitlement yes, basically a hardware ID on the server which is being used for reference when activating again. When replacing the mobo a new hardware ID is created. No single hardware (even the exact model) is the same, there will always be a change somewhere what causes the hardware ID to change and that is why activation problems may occur.

I believe that with the newest version of Windows 10, 1607, the activation system was changed to Microsoft Accounts (activation connected to Microsoft Account) so that even when replacing the motherboard you can still activate Windows. unfortunately I'm not 100% sure anymore because I've read it a while ago.

  9. If it is a GPU problem , can it be disabled or changed? Can I upgrade it to new GPU. I love playing games. Not played new games quite a while *Smile))

Now my laptop is not able to boot in windows 10, also safe mode is not working . How can I connect my digital entitlement to my microsoft id? If this happens chances are that I wont loose my windows 10 os.
I have COA sticker on the back of laptop. But it is for windows 7 home premium, that I upgraded to windows 10

For a proper answer about the digital entitlement and Microsoft, post a new thread in the activation forum please.

A GPU can certainly be disabled, if it is disabled Windows will switch back to its own graphics driver.

A system not being able to boot in safe mode is not an issue with the GPU, because the GPU isn't used in safe mode.

  11. OK , Thank you for your time *Smile

  12. I have exactly the same problem. Been looking intermittently for months now; I've left following up on this issue as I had given up until now. I've read it a couple of times on WWW that this is a driver issue instead of a hardware fault.

What I've felt so far in my experience is one of memory banks (chip) of the GPU is corrupted (not user space memory but maybe GPU BIOS?) and is now not able to initialize itself properly (while windows is booting up..this doesn't makes snese as we still see something but as the memory requirements grows due to the fact that windows is trying to load required hardware drivers during bootup and results in a corruption) which eventually makes shop vendors recommend for a mobo replacement/charge more $.

If anyone has a solution or even a hint kindly post here; let's fix this sh!t up *Biggrin
