BSOD Attempt to write to readonly memory error (VHDMP.SYS) during Backup

My computer delivers a BSOD and reboots when I get to about 95% through a Windows backup - just near the end of the "Creating a system image" part. I am backing up my SSD to a partition on my HDD and
the process has worked for years both for Windows 7 and now Windows 10.

The error message points to VHDMP.SYS.

It's actually failed intermittently for some weeks and then backed-up okay but recently some 15 attempts have all failed. I've tried checks to the (low) limit of my technical capabilities (checked disk and
memory). The partition is about twice the size of my SSD.

  3. BSOD: Attempt to write to read only memory (VHDMP.SYS) during Windos Backup

Since yesterday I have been failing to backup the HDD image on an external hard drive. At every attempt the system crashed when the process was about 95% done. The BSOD says that I attempted to write to read only memory and points at the VHDMP.SYS file (whatever
it is). I have googled the problem and I can see that a few other people also experienced it, but all of those threads lack a solution. Please help me.

As a temporary work around, use Macrium Reflect Free instead of the built-in Windows 10 Backup, see if that works. At least that way you will have a good backup. Then you can work on the vhdmp.sys problem.

The dump indicates a problem with BitDefender anti-virus: avc3.sys
Code: ffff8301`bb8be4d8 fffff80f`813739f1*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for avc3.sys *** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for avc3.sys avc3+0x139f1[/quote] Driver Description: BitDefender Active Virus Control filter driver
    Driver Update Site: Support: http://www.bitdefender.com/support/consumer.html
Downloads: Download Antivirus Software - Bitdefender Downloads

    Uninstall BitDefender anti-virus.
Make sure Windows Defender and Windows Firewall are enabled.

Run that way for awhile to test, see if that resolves the problem.

Note: Uninstall, not just turn off/disable.

    Hello Rich,

After running without Bitdefender for nearly a week, I am glad to say that there have been no errors, and back-up has completed as it should.
    Many Thanks

Sounds good. Are you still using Windows Defender or have you switched to another Av program?
