BSOD when I unplug my kobo touch from USB

    Hi there,

I've been trying to get my Kobo Touch to be recognized properly by my Windows 10 desktop for a couple of days now. Bear in mind my laptop running completely stock Windows 10 picks it up flawlessly, so I think there is something screwing going on with my USB drivers.

Prior to today, it would recognize the Kobo as a disk in device manager but would not auto-mount and appear in Explorer. Today, I did a firmware update and afterward Windows 10 started recognizing it and auto-mounting the disk, which now appears as drive I:.

But now every time I unplug it from USB, I get a BSOD (SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED).

Prior to updating the firmware on the Kobo I took multiple runs at installing and reinstalling the AMD chipset drivers (SB950 on Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 motherboard) to try to get it to detect properly. Strangely there are no chipset drivers offered by the manufacturer or by the AMD Catalyst/Crimson chipset driver installer except for a USB Filter Driver, which is (according to the installer) for a USB 1.0/1.1 audio device.

So far the BSOD seems to only happen when I unplug the Kobo. I can plug and unplug my phone, which also shows up as a disk, and I also have an external hard drive.

I've attached the output from the forum tool. I hope someone can help me get to the bottom of this.

    :)

  2. Kobo e readers won't work since windows update. I get a "directory name invalid" and " mass storage device is old and cannot work with USB 3.0"

Has anyone had trouble connecting e readers since the lastest update to windows 10? My Kobo touch and Kobo Glo are no longer able to connect to my PC - I get a "directory name invalid" message and when i trouble shoot in the devices and printers manager
it tells me that my " mass storage device is old and cannot work with USB 3.0" but my USB ports have not changed and my e readers were working a few days ago. What can i do?

  3. Kobo reader and Windows anniversary update

Since the Windows 10 Anniversary update, my Kobo Glo reader is no longer recognised by my laptop when connected via USB. It is also not recognised by the Kobo desktop app nor Adobe Digital Editions. Accordingly no new books can be added if purchased
from a store apart from Kobo. Kobo say that Microsoft is preparing a "build" to rectify the problem. Does anyone know of this "build"? In the meantime does anyone have any suggestions as to how the Kobo reader can be recognised by the Windows anniversary build?

BSOD when I unplug my kobo touch from USB

Does it matter on which port you attach the Kobo?

No, I've tried most of the front panel USB 2 ports as well as one of the blue USB 3 ports in the back.

P.S. Thanks for looking at this. I'm tearing my hear out here.

If you plug the Kobo into another PC, I don't think the same crash happens?

This would be either a problem with the USB drivers, or the Kobo device, but due to no USB driver updates for Windows 10 from Gigabyte for your motherboard it is a bit difficult to find out which of them is the cause.
