  1. Build 10049 didn't install

    Hi folks.
I'm in the Insider Program, and have been running 10041 on the "slow ring"
Tonight I decided to move on to the "fast ring", and try build 10049.
So, I went into the update settings, changed to "fast ring", and searched for updates. First I got a Defender update, which went fine.
Then came 10049. It took ages but all the files loaded, and the update started.
After a few minutes, the monitor appeared to go to sleep, and I got a black screen.
I thought it might be doing something in the background, but after about 45 minutes I did a hard shutdown. After a couple of attempts, it rebooted into 10041.
So, I tried again. It went exactly the same. This time I left it on the black screen for over two hours (I went out)
Still nothing. So I did another hard shutdown, and then rebooted, This time it took about 10 attempts, but finally I'm back on 10041.
I got a message saying that Windows was unable to update.
I looked at my update history, and it seems that a language pack is failing to install each time.
Could this be balking the update? It looks that way.
Any ideas people? Cheers, John *Huh

I undertook a fresh install of 10041 via on a spare rig that I set up, unfortunately after an update (not sure, but think it was to do with security) the system refused to boot. So now begs the question, do I waste more time and try again, or wait until there is an 10049 or 10056 iso available for download.

  3. Might want to see if the 10049 .esd file downloaded. I had trouble with the update from 10041 to 49 but the .esd file downloaded without a problem and I was planning on a clean install anyway.

  4. Build 10049 didn't install

Well, after two tries, Build 10049 is finally installed. It took 9 or 10 hours! (And I found out that isn't unusual; others have reported that weird length of time). But it works ok so far.

Good! I have seen that it does take a long time for some to install 10049. Enjoy *Biggrin

I needed about the same time to install it. But it did not really bother me because that was all happening in a virtual machine that noodled quietly in the background.

  7. So maybe I jumped the gun, only giving it two hours?
On the other hand, I did get the message about the language pack failing.

Speaking about Language Pack: Build 10049 does install unexpected things, like a Korea Media Player, and Korea Messenger. But I'll deal with those eventually.

  9. Before updating try this:
Turn off all languages other than your native one in
Control Panel - > Programs & Features -> (Left pane) Turn Windows features on or off

Check what Settings says about languages - remove any that you don't or won't be using.
    Settings -> Time & Language -> Region & Language -> Languages.

I'm not sure where 10.041 stores this info - it's changed a few times, so check both 'control panels'

To be honest, I'm not sure if that will prevent the Preview Build update from overkill (installing all available languages) - worth a shot though.

I got Download Station too on my Qnap NAS. It's good to have one if you have a slow connection. You don't have to keep your PC turned on. It will keep downloading in the background direct to the NAS. *Smile
