    Built-in microphone on Surface Laptop 5 registers no sound


    We tried deleting the device with the driver from Device Manager, refresh, reboot, ran surface diagnostics, windows updates which fail to install only 24H2, DISM and SFC scans, installed all Surface updates, microphone physically looks fine. I think I need a warranty replacement. It's covered with an extended one until 1/8/27.

    We value your contribution to the Microsoft Community. I apologize that you’re encountering problems with the built-in microphone on your Surface Studio Laptop. One potential solution is to verify whether the microphone is configured as the default recording device. Here are the steps to do so:



    1. Right-click on the speaker icon in the taskbar and select "Sounds."
    2. Click on the "Recording" tab.
    3. Right-click on the microphone and select "Set as Default Device."
    4. Click "Apply" and then "OK."

    If still persists, we will refresh the driver in the device manager.

    1. Press the Windows key + X and select "Device Manager."
    2. Expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" category.
    3. Right-click on the audio device and select "uninstall driver."
    4. do not put any check mark on the small box that say delete.
    5. Just click uninstall then okay and restart the Surface to apply changes.

    Next steps are to download and run the Surface recovery image. This will also fix any hidden issue on the Surface device.

    Please also download the driver pack on your Surface device. Download Surface Studio 2+ Drivers and Firmware. from Official Microsoft Download Center

    Laptop switching from headset to built-in microphone on its own.

    I did disable the built-in microphone a few times during my initial troubleshooting. But that doesn't force the headset to pick up the sound input function. Even after reboot, I just have no microphone
    at all while sound still comes through the headset.

    Built-in Microphone not working (only residual sound)


    I'm not sure if this problem came when I updated to Windows 10, but my built-in microphone is not working anymore. When I test it there is some residual sound (as some friends also tell me when I do TeamSpeak with them without a headset through the 3.5mm jack). I'm using an Acer Aspire 5741 (I'm not sure how to check the specific microphone specs or its driver). Isthis common? Do you have any suggestions?
