Windows 10: Built In Windows VPN Speed Limit? (Hosting / Connecting)

Hey Guys,

My Question is: Is the built in windows vpn (hosting and connecting) limited in speed?

I am hosting a VPN on my windows PC (I use it as a server pc). When downloading a file the speed is ~12.3 megabytes per second (Around 100mbps)

The Server PC and the Client connecting both have a Gigabit connection.

The server pc is running an ryzen 5 2600 16gb ram (no issues there)

I am using ptpp protocol.



My only ideas for what the bottleneck could be is either:

> Modem needs an upgrade

> The built in VPN is limited to 100mbps

Win 10 Pro - Built-in VPN Host/Server L2TP

Hi Guys,

I have a question about setting up VPN Host on my office machine running win 10 pro, as I want to connect from home to work through rdp. When I asked this question on other forums, everyone rather than telling the pros/cons of win 10 built-in VPN pointed
out either buy a gateway/router with built-in VPN, install DDWRT on router, use OPENVPN or Pfsense. My question is what's wrong with built-in win 10 VPN Host?

Other question is, if I decided to go with win 10 VPN, (I saw few videos/tutorials) they set the L2TP encryption on the client machine. I did not see the settings on the Host machine to accept on L2TP connection. Is this correct? Also, can I change the default
port (setting on the router) to any other port for vpn connection, such as RDP port. I changed the default RPD port.

If you feel comfortable saying the name of your provider, I can take a look on their site. Often, providers list various methods for connecting. One option might be with their custom-developed client, one might be with OpenVPN and one might be with the
built-in VPN capability in Windows.

I suggest that you try to configure the VPN in another way. You can ask the provider for the manual configuration credentials and add it through Windows' settings:

Best FREE vpn client? Need to connect to my home VPN


I created a remote access VPN (l2tp/ipsec) on my router at my house. If I want to connect to my VPN server remotely ,what do you suggest as a good free vpn client?

I know windows 10 has a built in vpn client, but would I notice any improvments (speed, stability, etc) using like cisco anywhere connect or any other free vpn clients?
