Windows 10: C drive is full and I'm running out of options

Well I have been dealing with never ending loss of space on my c drive for years and now I'm finally at a loss. My setup is a ASUS ET2411IUTI-B002C with windows 10 installed. The c drive is 80 gb and the d drive 850 gb. I have tried changing the partition but no space to do so. I am sure this has been posted on before. Any suggestions will be appreciated. I am a novice when it comes to this stuff.

If you were to switch to RAID, you would be formatting the system or at least imaging it to external media, setting up your RAID, imaging back to the new RAID.



Honestly, just add a drive and move all of your data files (as it is likely YOUR DATA taking up the space) to the drive and keep the 500GB as your C and where you install programs and such. Store you DATA on the secondary drive (redirect folders like documents,
music, pictures, videos, favorites and even Desktop to the new drive.)



You are not 'extending' the C drive onto the other drive - you can only extend to the same physical drive or RAID array.

My Win10 SSD c drive is 500 gigs and running out of room. I would be happy to add another 500 gig SSD to expand C. How should I do that best for performance. I prefer not to reinstall windows unless necessary. Should I use hardware raid? Should I add the
drive and make it an extended partition for c? something else?

Disk clean up and defragment ?

 

Yeah I have performed both of those and usually frees up a gig but it seems like not even an hour later fills up again

 

It was a feature on several Sony VAIO computers I worked on that came with WinXP that the C: partition was small and D: was larger. It wasn't a big problem to resize D: down and increase C: up to include the newly unallocated space but newer computers tend to have a partition between C: and D: that can't conveniently be moved or removed. I got a new ASUS Desktop 2 weeks ago with the 1TB drive split as 150GB for C: and 780GB for D: with 100MB at the beginning and 500MB in the middle . I try to install the larger programs on D: and put all my downloads, pictures, music, etc., on D:. Microsoft Office 2013 was the only one so far that insisted on being on the same partition as Windows.

 

I cured a similar problem by deleting unused programs and the running the clean up and defrag , i once had a toshiba laptop which came brand new with about 17 toshiba programs preinstalled . I deleted the lot and only one saved itself by warning me that something won't work if i uninstall it .

 

What you need to do is shrink the D: partition by as much as you'd like to increase the C: partition. Once you shrink the D: partition, you will now have unallocated space on the disk. The C: drive can then be expanded into that unallocated space.

If your D: drive is full, then you will need to delete some data or otherwise get it off the disk so the partition can be made smaller. Another option would be to install another disk drive and move some of the data to it.

A lot of the apps won't go to the d drive only c, iTunes is one of these, whenever I try to install to d I keep getting error messages not opening but when it's on c starts right up, I tried to delete a lot of apps and programs to perform windows 10 updates but still don't have enough space

 

I will try that, I did try to use this program AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard, but it wouldn't let me do anything with c drive but I could break up the d drive anyway I wanted

 

If there isn't any unallocated disk space on the drive, you wouldn't be able to do anything except shrink the C: drive. As I said, you need to shrink the D: partition in order to create unallocated space that the C: drive can be expanded into.

Except for back in the DOS days when everything expected to be run from the A: drive, I personally haven't encountered issues installing programs to drives other than C:. Of course, even though the main program is installed on another drive, parts of the app are still put in various Windows system folders on the C: drive.

 

Disk Clean Up...

There's a 'clean up system files' button in Disk Clean Up. This usually finds more that can be removed - in particular the 'Windows Update...' items. This also adds a second tab to Disk Clean Up that offers 'More Options', one of which is to delete all but the most recent Restore Point. These can take up a surprising amount of space, but only delete them if you're sure your system is working well and you won't need them.

You could also set your Pagefile to be only on D: - see Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\System - Advanced system settings
