  2. fixing failure to boot, inaccessible boot device, raw drives, etc.

    When attempting to fix:

    failure to boot

    inaccessible boot device

    raw drives

    etc.

one of the methods is to run the command chkdsk /r

Does anyone know how the chkdsk /r command is able to fix the disk drives when it cannot see the hidden partitions?

On a clean install of windows using GPT there are 4 partitions:

    Recovery

    Sytem

    Reserved

    Primary

Only one partition is labeled. That is typically C:

The other partitions are typically hidden.

So when chkdsk /r is ran it is only scanning and fixing C:

The chkdsk /r is not scanning and fixing the System, Reserved, and Recovery partitions since they are hidden or not labeled.

The C: drive or C: partition is only the data partition.

So how does chkdsk /r fix inaccessible boot device, some raw drives, or failure to boot?

Please post any references about chkdsk /r with regards to 1 disk and what it will and will not fix on the 1 disk when ran without the using a drive letter.

And please post any references about how if it does not scan and fix hidden partition how it is able to fix boot failures, inaccessible boot device, some raw drives, etc.

Boot Error - C: Drive is raw?

My laptop (Windows 10) would not boot either due to me being to rough with it or me turning it off at the wrong moment. I think it is a hard drive issue.

When it turns on, it first says "preparing automatic repair," then continues to a black screen. After a lot of loading it comes to the Windows boot option menu. I have tried the startup setting button, the system restore button and automatic repair.

I also used the command prompt button and tried the commands I am about to mention and these are the results.

    "c:" and "cd c:"

The command could not be performed because of an I/O error.

    "chkdsk /r c

The type of the filesystem is RAW.

CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives.

When I tried to refresh the PC I was told that it couldn't be performed because "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again."

I found a possible solution to this issue that would let me refresh the PC and tried to change the active partition in order to fix this using diskpart commands. But it wouldn't let me change active partitions and I can't remember why, but it takes a
long time for the PC to load again and for cmd to open (~2 hours) so I will come back later to present the error later.

Any help or explanation would be appreciated. I'd guess the hard drive is broken but would like to recover files if possible.

Boot Error - C: Drive is raw?

    Hi,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. We regret the inconvenience caused to you.

Try to repair your computer by creating a Windows 10 Bootable media (i.e. USB or DVD) using
Media Creation Tooland check if the issue is resolved.

    • Insert the Windows installation disc in the disc drive or connect USB media and then start the computer.
    • Press a key when the message Press any key to boot from CD or DVD appears.

If your PC does not detect the media automatically
      • During the restart process, read the screen for any instructions that explain how to interrupt normal startup and enter the basic input/output system (BIOS) setup utility. Most PCs use the F2, F10, ESC, or DEL key to begin the BIOS Setup.
      • Look for a tab in the BIOS Setup Utility that is labeled Boot Order,
Boot Options, or Boot. Following the directions on the screen, use the arrow keys to go to the
        Boot Order, then press Enter.
      • Locate the CD, DVD, or USB flash drive (this might be called Removable Device) in the Boot list. Following the directions on the screen, use the arrow keys to move the drive up so that it appears first in the Boot list. Press Enter. The boot order
sequence is now changed to boot from the CD, DVD, or USB flash drive.
      • Press F10 to save your changes and to exit the BIOS Setup Utility. Select
Yes in the confirmation window. The PC will restart. Allow the PC to restart normally. The scan will take a few minutes and remove any malware that may be infecting your computer.
    • Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or another input method, and then click
      Next.
    • Click Repair your computer.
    • Click the operating system that you want to repair and then click
      Next
      .
    • On the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot. Select
      Advanced Options >Command Prompt
    • Type Bootrec /RebuildBcd, and then press
      ENTER
      .

If the issue persist, I suggest you to get in touch with your device manufacturer for unlocking the drive and try to
reset your PC selecting keeping my files options.

Write back to us with the status of the issue for further assistance. Your reply is important for us to ensure we assist you accordingly.

    Thank you.
